Wordsmithing Magic from the Crossroads

Tarot Book Progress Report: July, 2022

As you know by now, I have several classes and my smaller “Tarot Boutique” workshops planned for the coming months. They take a lot of my time and resources, since I do not have an army of minions handling all the programming and administrative stuff.

But I love sharing my passion for magic and the Tarot, especially since (let’s be honest) there is a lot of crap being peddled out there, AND I can welcome Tarot friends from all over the world, thanks to being forced (no longer kicking and screaming) to learn to Zoom.

But my deepest passion is my writing, and so, yes, I have been scribbling away at my first Tarot book. The one that is the compilation of my 50 year-long love affair with the Tarot and my almost 20 years of writing the Card of the Week for you.

All of the cards are now in rough draft. I am adding some additional material to introduce the way I have approached this project .. I don’t believe anyone has written anything quite like it. 🙂

And I think that you are going to love it. Well, anyway, I sure hope so!

In addition to fleshing out some of the adjunct chapters (like  suggestions for a Tarot journal, an introduction to spreads, etc.), I am weighing my choices as to how to go about publishing.

I am leaning towards self-publishing, because I am a little bit of a control freak about my baby, and I want to retain the creative rights. Especially to the title, which I have worked very hard on, and polished, and am pretty happy with.

Because, as you might expect, every step of my process has been guided. Well, duh, right? And I’d rather not have somebody else’s executive decisions overriding my heart’s purpose.

Even if they tell me it would sell more books.

Because when it really comes down to it, nowadays, publishers publish, but they don’t do much about marketing. I would be handling that anyway, right? So…

Naturally, at this stage, I am very open to additional thoughts, so if you have inside experience you’d care to share, please comment. I am all ears.

(But please don’t rain down a deluge of emails on me, or if you must, please understand I probably can’t respond to everyone.. see paragraph one).

The other phase now quickly approaching (but not quite ready) is content editing. That means getting savvy people who can read through what I’ve got and tell me where it works, and where it doesn’t. This is different from line editing, which is where someone goes through and looks for grammatical problems, typos, misspellings, etc. That comes later.

So please stay tuned. Solid progress is being made. Most of the brain dump is now pinned (and penned?) down. I hope to have a shining new book in your hands before the next total solar eclipse in the USA.

Okay, yes, hopefully LOADS sooner.

And huge thanks to everyone who is cheering me on!

i’m so excited for your book—can’t wait to see it come to life and sitting on my shelf. i know it will be a wonderful addition to the writing about tarot that exists, and a corrective to the less accurate information which is sadly widespread. really looking forward to reading it whenever it is ready.

I loved reading Beth’s “writing progress” this morning having just yesterday told myself that it’s OK for me to disregard the Waite and Pollock interpretations of two cards that came up in a reading because I KNOW what they mean in this moment.
Yes to self-publishing. Thanks for the update; wiggling my toes in anticipation of the book.
