Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Newsletter Subscribers:
I had not expected to need to explain this again, especially since I lost so many readers when I was posting On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder for twenty weeks each Friday during the first administration of the felon currently in office.
I guess I figured that everyone who expected me to be a sweet, mystical woo-woo with completely neutral (or detached) views about “earthly matters” had already abandoned me.
But once again, I am hearing from some folks that you are unhappy with the “political” content of my newsletter and my posts.
Because I do care about all my readers, and because I want to be clear, here is my point of view. Take it as ye will:
Serving My Country
What I am doing is not about “politics.” It has nothing to do with Republicans or Democrats, or liberals or conservatives, or any other faction.
I have studied political science and history enough to recognize an authoritarian coup when I see it. Countless, far more experienced and well-trained experts agree.
And that is where we are. How can I in good conscience pretend all is well and carry on as if unaffected?
My country needs me.
My new column in my weekly newsletter, The Shambhala Warrior News, is definitely and directly in response to the crisis now unfolding in the United States (and which then ripples out into the wider world).
As a seer, artist, and woman of spirit, I am serving my country.
Not any party, not any politician. My country is in the gravest danger since the Civil War, and I am duty-bound to call it out, help awaken those I might reach, and assist in every way I can.
I cannot fathom telling you about the Tarot card of the week in some manner that is divorced from the terrible realities unfolding for our people and the sacred land.
I can’t and I won’t.
This is how I serve my country. This is my path as a Shambhala warrior.
For those who feel they must part ways with me over this, I am sorry that is your preference and I wish you well.
For those who share my understanding of this pivotal moment, thank you for sticking around. Together, as The Tower continues to fall, we are busy weaving a new paradigm.
I see us as collaborative visionaries together, building a world that aligns with the Principles of Unity, the core values of Reclaiming Witchcraft, the tradition in which I have been trained.
In part, it declares that our tradition:
…honors the wild, and calls for service to the earth and the community. We work in diverse ways, including nonviolent direct action, for all forms of justice: environmental, social, political, racial, gender and economic.
We are an anti-racist tradition that strives to uplift and center BIPOC voices (Black, Indigenous, People of Color). Our feminism includes a radical analysis of power, seeing all systems of oppression as interrelated, rooted in structures of domination and control.

I believe it is no coincidence that you and I, gifted with our lifetimes of experience and wisdom, as well as our ability to move between the worlds and attune to the spirit beings that work with us, have somehow found one another. It is my belief that we are here to bear witness to and assist the final fall of the malevolent, toxic patriarchy. Together we can help our species evolve while tending to the wounds inflicted by the dying collapse of those power systems of hatred and greed.
And the Tarot is a splendid friend and advisor for us, as we create a more sustainable, equitable, compassionate culture.

It breaks my heart to watch what is happening. I truly hope that you are right about why we are here, and I plan do to whatever I can to hasten that final fall.

I am so sorry that you find it necessary to explain your concerns and your defense of our democracy. The ancestors on my mother’s side fought and died to create this Union. My paternal ancestors came here to escape persecution. Now, we are once again threatened with tyranny. It is my hope that more people speak up, call or write their representatives and senators, and even attend events in support of Democracy. I applaud your efforts and appreciate that you share your concerns. It is important in these troubled times to step up and speak out. Neutrality has no place in defending Democracy.

i am with you on this, beth. it is a duty to speak up in times when harm is being done. as is often observed, keeping silent empowers only the oppressors, and maintaining apolitical neutrality in a time of crisis is either cowardice or privilege. i am a yoga teacher/practitioner, a reiki master, a tarot reader, an empath, a ‘highly sensitive person’…i am as woo-woo and as earthy-crunchy as it gets whilst still remaining in touch with reality. i use my sensitivity in the service of healing, but it also makes staying informed and engaged very hard. balance and self-care are needed, but being informed and speaking up also is a duty of care and of citizenship. people are being harmed, democracy is actively being dismantled, cruelty is everywhere, and the progress of decades is being destroyed. everyone who continues to oppose this strengthens others’ voices. remaining quiet is not a course my soul can choose.

Thank you for saying all of this! Why does society feel those of magical spirits should airy-fairy woo woo beings of light all the time. It is a fact that being a practitioner of the magical arts that one must work within the light and dark. In the US, we are indeed living in troubled times and it is imperative that we tackle this oncoming dictatorship. The US has no King and it goes without saying that democracy and freedom is at stake. We can’t allow this to happen. Everyday, I hear the felon state what fresh new hell he is imposing upon us. Especially, here in NYC, where I was born and raised. And from this monster originates. If we sit back and remain passive history is bound to repeat itself. This is way bigger than red vs blue. I’ve been saying this since election day. And I need people to understand how perilous this entire situation is by the monster having a second term. We must ALL take a stand. There is no time for equivocating. If you love what the United States is supposed to stand for then you must rise up! Too much is at stake!

In 1991 I joined the federal judiciary and took not one but two oaths to protect and defend the Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic and I was never released from those oaths when I retired in 2019. I will continue to honour those oaths until I leave this physical form.
Having seen the founding documents at the National Archives with my own eyes,it is obvious that they are static pieces of paper and open to interpretation, but America is not static. America is vibrant and diverse and divided. It is up to all of us to decide how we wish to act when broligarchs (or any enemies foreign or domestic) threaten to dismantle what so many fought to preserve and improve — many with their very lives — but I will act with fierce love and devotion to the ideals that all are created equal and have certain inalienable rights. I will uphold my oaths.

Thank you for your wise words. I stand with you and your thoughts and feelings. This is an unprecedented time and I share your concerns. It is striking to me how many do not feel this upheaval in our freedoms and our values. I know many people who expertise this same world are not afraid of what I see, they may not have a protective warrior spirit that can discern evil.
As a spiritual astrologer, I have always been amazed when people assert that I should have no opinion about “real world” events and should stick to “spiritual matters.” Which I find ironic, since if we don’t take a stand in the “real world” about truly destructive forces, we soon will find ourselves threatened if we have any opinion at all other than the one we are told we can have. When the come for the press, none of us are safe.

Thank you, and I think we must all share our feelings about what is important to us. As for me, I am all in, and I feel that we have to stick together and support each other during this storm that has been brewing for ages. I am beyond sad that it has erupted. I often wonder what my parents and grandparents would think about it all, and they all lived through two world wars…and you know the rest. I can only hope for the best to come, but it is a struggle. I never thought that at my age, and I am 72, I would see this happening to our beloved country once again. I wish for everyone here in this community and beyond to keep holding on to your highest beliefs and to keep working towards resolution and peace for all. And this will take commitment and focus. Yes, a slew of folks unsubscribed, and of course that is their prerogative. Still, I am sorry about it, because some had been with me a very long time.
