The flickering light of democracy still shines. It remained “a light for us in dark places, when all other lights [went] out.” We have seen that it is both fragile and resilient. Now we must work together to strengthen the foundations, and root out weaknesses in the structure of our democracy. Two weeks ago, a violent coup attempt took place in our capitol building, which took the lives of five people, and threatened the lives of the Vice President and Speaker of the House of Representatives (number 3 in the succession after the President and Vice President), and many others. All those who fomented and conspired in the attempted murder of our democracy must be held accountable.

yesterday my husband and i watched the inauguration, something neither of us ever has done before. we don’t have network or cable telly, so he had to pay for CNN premium content and bounce it from his phone to the television…all so we could see something we took for granted all our adult lives, the simple, normal transfer of power from one presidency to the next.

it felt good to see the relative normalcy (although razor wire-topped barricades, etc are an innovation due to the violence of january 6th and the ongoing threats). we toasted biden’s swearing in, touching glasses “to sanity”; but immediately afterward, we both remarked that it was more like a reprieve than a real transformation. so much damage has been done, so much work lies ahead. the forces that brought us to this point have not disappeared magically.

still, i’ll happily take a celebratory interlude after four long years of disgust, dismay, and depression. i will hope that this is, indeed, a new dawn, and that a biden administration can combat the covid disaster, bring accountability to those who have been dismantling our government, and move us back to the pursuit of justice and equality and sane ecological policies. this blog has been a refuge and resource for many of us, i am sure, especially those of us who seem surrounded by the opposite perspectives. so cheers for the virtual community you have created!

Tears in my eyes all day long yesterday, and then seeing your posts this morning, I am a puddle all over again.

Thank you for your words, your wisdom, and your flickering, beautiful lights, my friends. Thank you for being here with me, with all of us.

We have so much healing and repair to do, but we DO outnumber those who would wreak havoc and treason. So let us cast those shadows back and join hands as we face the tasks ahead. It’s a new day. Blessings one and all.
