Common aim is stronger than blood.
Even though I sometimes try to imagine what the Tarot will show us in a week of momentous astrology or events, I am always gently reminded once again how much wiser the Tarot is than I.
For although this week sees the closing of the much-discussed Summer eclipse window, the great American and Canadian Summer holidays, plus the many ongoing crises now unfolding across the world, we receive a card with one of the simplest of drawings. Welcome this week to the Eight of Wands.
This is the only one of Pamela Colman Smith’s Minor Arcana cards with no human figure or parts in it. In fact, there are no people, animals, or celestial bodies of any sort. Thus we are given a universal message that is not tied to any one situation, but appears to reflect something about energy itself.
After all, the Wands represent the qualities of fire, magic, desire, change, and growth. And the eights of the Tarot are about abilities, self-directed action, and moving ahead. So here we see vitality at its essence – in motion, focused, and without hindrance from any particular circumstance or personality.
Yet we can also see that this is not chaos. These Wands are moving swiftly forward in an orderly, intentional way. Flying like arrows, they are all in alignment and balance — not an easy feat to re-create, despite its apparent simplicity as captured at this moment.
Do-Overs, Reflections, and More Fire
In past years, this card has frequently turned up at the end of a Mercury retrograde period. Although this time, that will not be the case until July 12, it is interesting that we are being shown that some kind of forward progress is possible.
Also notable is that this Eight follows last week’s Nine of Wands. Could this be a portion of the story of the Wands suit in reverse? Last week’s Nine depicted the exhausted conclusion of the fiery Wands, with the suggestion to rest.
If so, perhaps you have been given a do-over. If you have wished you could act with total faith towards your desired outcome, knowing when to set things in motion and when to let the chips fall as they may, this is your chance.
For while Mercury retrograde is a time of possible travel delays, flubbed communications, and glitchy technology, this visit from the Eight of Wands suggests that our passion can be harnessed to manifest profound progress.
Last week, Mars transited into its home fire sign of Aries. Most of the time, a Mars transit through a sign lasts about six weeks. But in this already extraordinary year, the trail-blazing planet of war, aggression, and courage parks in its own sign for six months!
That’s a lot of fire happening, and care must be taken to modify headstrong impulses. The Eight of Wands is an inspiring example of how to line up all that energy and make it count. (Saturn’s retrograde this Wednesday, back into ambitious and organized Capricorn could certainly be helpful, too).
More big news this week is the Full Moon eclipse, which closes the three-fold Summer 2020 eclipses, as well as the Capricorn-Cancer polarity series.
Lorna Bevan writes:
Next Sunday July 5th the Lunar Eclipse is the very last of 9 eclipses across Capricorn/Cancer since 2018. One by one, they have brought home to every single one of us the lived Truth of the fragility and impermanence of life – as Saturn, Jupiter and Pluto’s transits through Capricorn at the same time have broken apart social frameworks, governments and the economy.
This is a time to be very gentle with yourself – the world will feel harsh and emotions raw. The Capricorn Moon can be hard on those of us who are sensitives…
The Eight of Wands reflects how we will soon find ourselves in new star wisdom territory.
In addition, this time of year, Sirius – the “Dog Star” – rises at sunrise. This is why early July begins the so-called “Dog Days of Summer.” In her 5-D subscription service (highly recommended!), Lorna explains the astrological significance of this time:
Every year during the first week of July, a sacred gateway of energy is activated between Earth and the Star Sirius, bringing heightened vibrations and spiritual advancement. This Star shines 23 times brighter than our own Sun and is known as Earth’s Spiritual Sun.
From July 3rd to the 7th, Sirius moves the closest to Earth and with our own Sun further away, Sirian energy is able to freely flow towards Earth, allowing us to receive direct downloads of information accelerating our evolution.
It is surely clear to everyone reading this that a focused, intentional acceleration of our evolution is the only way forward for humanity, given the multiple crises we are now encountering. The Eight of Wands, being a harbinger of powerful magic in flight, points to how this may unfold.
Lay the Groundwork, Launch the Change
This card portends tremendous potential for all who are finding new allies and organizing together to re-vise, re-imagine, re-structure, and re-set the status quo. (Perfect watchwords for a Mercury retrograde, by the way).
Arthur Waite referred to this card as “the arrows of love,” and anyone hoping to establish change for good knows that kindness and compassion are the essential elements for enduring results.
Wands do not go flying in this highly organized pattern without careful preparation. Frantic action for its own sake or knee-jerk reactions are unhelpful. This is not the time for multi-tasking, conflicting ambitions, or ego.
History teaches over and over that a shared vision and dedication to a common aim is ultimately more compelling than any king, tyrant, army, or bloodshed.
This week, remember the first rule of magick: Intention is everything.
Be clear and specific about what you want. Simplify. Prepare. Prioritize. Organize your many interests and talents, and commit to your most cherished target.
The stars are aligning. Be bold, be clear. When you are ready, with all your strength, launch.
Change is in the air.
