Inspiring Enchantment & Illumination with Tarot & Intuitive Guidance

Tarot Card of the Week, March 30 – April 5, 2020: Page of Swords

Notice that your mind wants to defend your position, to justify, to show proof of why it is right.
Byron Katie

Well, well. What do you know? Back for the first time since last year’s Interplanetary Tarot Day, and poised to slice and dice, let us welcome the Page of Swords.

The Swords suit is ruled by the Element of Air, and corresponds to the energy of the intellect, words, the mind, attitude, and information.

And the Pages in the Tarot are often messengers and risk-takers, with little in the way of possessions, protection, or equipment, besides the tool of their suit.

Unlike the darker, more stormy scenes in many of the other Swords cards, the sky behind the Page is blue, although the clouds are gathering. The landscape is rough, his hair is windswept, and the circling birds all point to turbulence. Yet he is quite still.

Is he angry? Why is he so defensive?

Where is the enemy in this picture, that causes him to draw his weapon? His sword points upwards, as if for justice.

But does he fear or expect betrayal, or is he haunted by the past, as he gazes backwards over his shoulder?

It is worth noting that the Page of Swords is the oldest of the four Pages. It will not be long before his initiation into knighthood. What test is he preparing for?

The Complexities of the Court Cards

As usual, the perplexing dilemma of the Court cards is – as the “people cards” of the Tarot, do they represent us, someone else, or simply the generalized energy?

For instance, the Page may represent someone engaged in the tumultuous nature of intellectual discovery and inspiration, before experience and wisdom can temper them. He (or she!) gives us a sense of waiting with sword drawn, for the “other shoe to drop.”

I know there is a lot of that feeling going around right now.

Who do you know that is constantly overflowing with ideas and sure they are the smartest person in the room? Yet, they may also find it difficult to follow through on all that cleverness, leaving projects abandoned as soon as they are on to their next bright idea.

This is also someone who insists on being heard.

Stars and Swords

On Monday, Mars (the planet named for the God of war) moves into the Air sign of Aquarius.

Mars is the planet of aggression, anger, and animal vitality. And Aquarius is renowned for originality, risk-taking, independence, and its avant garde, even eccentric, views.

Astrology wizard (and birthday girl today – March 30), Elisabeth Grace reminds us that Aquarius presides over “networks, technology, astrology, aviation, circulation, groups, freedom, unconventional expression, friendship, and the masses,” so these matters will definitely be in the spotlight, possibly accompanied by conflict or controversy.

An inexperienced youth brandishing his sword seems rather appropriate, don’t you think?

Annie Heese details more of what we can expect during this period.

Dynamic yet erratic energy levels, achieving our goals through hit or miss tactics, and impersonal expression of anger are characteristics of Mars in Aquarius. We are team players–cooperative and less concerned about personal power. We are attracted to unconventional methods, and tend to approach problems from an intellectual, detached perspective.

Dynamic, erratic, and spoiling for a fight – yes, the Page of Swords would be right at home there.

On a different note, the famed Ralfee Finn writes about another powerful influence that is bearing down on us, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic:

Jupiter is currently in Capricorn conjunct Pluto—that conjunction is exact and separating on April 4—and because Jupiter symbolizes the global dimensions of daily life, this is the week we could experience the beginning of a global reorganization among the many governments combating the virus, specifically in how we share information and supplies and start a cooperative plan for the future.

There are two additional Jupiter/Pluto conjunctions: June 29 and November 12, so there’s plenty of time to sort this out.

I remind you again how the Page of Swords holds his weapon in a way that is reminiscent of either playing a bat and ball game of some sort, or else in defense of justice. Perhaps it is a little of both – a game, but in the role of champion for fairness and truth.

At his finest, he is an independent thinker, insisting on hard facts and provable science. He is a potential expert communicator, which is something we desperately need in this global crisis. But as a Page, the potential is not yet seasoned and tested, so beware of jumping to conclusions, or the influence of someone with ulterior motives.

Speaking of which …

Trouble Ahead, Trouble Behind

In older traditions, the Page of Swords was sometimes interpreted as a spy — someone moving back and forth between two camps, delivering messages that have a hidden agenda.

Thus, he glances over his shoulder, lest he be discovered.

Even in a more contemporary view, he is preparing for trouble brewing, especially regarding ideas, information, and perceptions. Do be sure that you are not the trouble maker.

If you are the one being tested, instead of arguing, or trying to talk your way out of a situation, the Page of Swords challenges us to be intellectually honest and face the truth. When we are the bearer of news or information that could affect others deeply, perhaps even wound them, it’s vital we remain balanced and diplomatic.

Remember that the blade you carry cuts both ways, and is tempered to a fine balance of both truth and compassion.

Avoid being drawn into peoples’ arguments, especially in this volatile time, and with many of us spending more time than usual on social media. Often such provocations are traps constructed from an immature ego and a need for drama. Be intelligent about whether you realistically can disarm or persuade the person who disagrees.

Confrontation or the possibility of being in harm’s way are rarely much fun. But the Page is light on his feet. Like last year’s Jedi in training, watch your back, stay on the high ground, and keep up your guard if you truly must.

Practice discernment. Know the difference between provocation and imminent danger.

The Page of Swords may like to show off his agility and bravery, but true understanding requires knowledge and insight. Now is not the time to win some contest about who is “right,” but to keep a cool head, and temper the brilliance of your mind with watchful wisdom.

seems a timely card, as many people (and i must include my usually conflict-avoidant self here) seem to be like matches that are one more strike on the box away from bursting into flame… i have seen lots of tactless commenting, foaming-at-the-mouth rants posted, arguments amongst people who don’t normally argue, fight-picking for no good reason, and an increasing sense of everyone’s being on their last functioning nerve. circumstances may explain it all adequately, but it’s interesting to me when currents in the world reflect the currents in the sky, as t’were…

this chap, with his poised sword and legs braced to turn and swing, looks like everyone i know, writ large.

deep breaths and alone time are clearly in order!

Thank you for sharing your insight on the world of Tarot. As I begin a new month, the Fool is who I am ready to be. I’m ready for a fresh start, leaving behind toxic people and BS that has been weighing heavily on my and keeping me from living my best life. Not knowing for sure what is to come personally or globally, moving forward I must.

Again thank you. Please consider me for either of the prizes you are offering. Blessings!
