Inspiring Enchantment & Illumination with Tarot & Intuitive Guidance

Tarot Card of the Week, Feb. 10-16, 2020: The Lovers Again

I am your lover, come to my side, I will open the gate to your love.
Come settle with me, let us be neighbors to the stars.
You have been hiding so long, endlessly drifting in the sea of my love.
Even so, you have always been connected to me.

Concealed, revealed, in the unknown, in the un-manifest.
I am life itself. You have been a prisoner of a little pond,
I am the ocean and its turbulent flood. Come merge with me,
leave this world of ignorance. Be with me, I will open the gate to your love.
Rumi

Less than one month has passed, and yet we are visited once more by this rich and beautiful Major Arcana card. In delicious timing for the week’s holiday that celebrates all things Love, let us welcome this return from The Lovers.

To read the more conventional interpretation that I posted in January, you can visit here.

But this week, my guidance offers a different perspective, especially in light of a world that seems to be careening into deeper darkness every hour.

I believe that the timing of this visit from The Lovers (through no plan or manipulation of my own, mind you!), during this the week of the annual holiday that celebrates romantic love is no coincidence.

In personal readings, The Lovers card is often exactly what you would assume – a card that speaks of relationships, sexual attraction, and creating union with someone.

But, as is true for all of the Major Arcana cards, there are also deeper energies at work — revelations about who we are and who we are becoming.

The Lovers speaks to how we make the choices that empower our relationships in the first place. It asks us to consider the deep questions of “What is love? Why do we love? To whom do we give our hearts?”

And, typically, those choices hinge on how we perceive ourselves and our place in the bigger scheme of things.

It reminds us that the people we associate with, to whom we give our time and devotion, are a direct reflection of our own self-image.

When we are needy, immature, or selfish, we draw people into our lives that feed and mirror those attitudes. When we are in balance with our highest, most courageous and loving path, we attract and appreciate others whose lights also shine brightly.

In other words, the healthier and happier we are, the healthier and happier will be those with whom we choose to be intimate.

This would also extend to the people we elect to represent us.

Political Trigger Alert. If You Don’t Like My Opinions, Bail Now

Since our last visit from this card, here in the U.S., our legislative branch of government failed to hold the CRWH (Current Resident of the White House) accountable for breaking his oath of office. This has put his irrational, narcissistic mental illness on full display as he takes his revenge, eliminating every civil servant he perceives as a threat to his consolidation of power.

These are certainly frightening times enough, never mind knowing that one of the most powerful and volatile men on the planet has been assured he is above all rule of law.

However — The Lovers offers a remedy. I believe we are being invited to turn our attention to the ways in which we can make a difference.

For as our elections shift into high gear, who, among our local officials, our county and state candidates, and even the Presidential competitors, shines with Love?

Observe where their messages reflect polarities of despair and fantasy, ego and posturing. The Lovers is none of these, but instead reflects what is possible when we each have complete faith in ourselves and each other, and therefore, act from our own higher nature.

And Then There’s Mercury

As you may know, three or four times per year, the planet Mercury appears to stop in its orbit and then go backwards, from our perspective on Earth. This is known as Mercury retrograde.

Because Mercury is the planet that astrology tells us rules communication, travel, business, and technology, these are the areas in which things can go haywire.

Our first 2020 Merc retro arrives at 7:54pm Eastern time on Sunday, Feb. 16, so BACK UP YOUR DEVICES NOW! Double check your travel plans, avoid making long-term contractual agreements if you can, and watch your words. For starters.

Elisabeth Grace’s forecast for the week includes a fascinating discussion about the Sabian Symbols for this particular Mercury retrograde. It is especially apropos of our Lovers influence. She tells us:

…at 6:34 AM ET, Mars enters Capricorn, adding potential for laser-beam efficiency to any action plan. What could go wrong?

Glad you asked. Today’s plan for world domination must also consider that Mercury turns retrograde at 7:54 PM ET — at 12 degrees of Pisces — and then squares the Moon at 10:10 PM ET. What is the Sabian Symbol for this retrograde Mercury?

“A sword in a museum,” an image — says Blain Bovee –– “of … a point in the journey of personal growth and refinement where the individual comes back into his or her own. Power lies within, not without.”

To which James Burgess, another Sabian specialist, adds:

“…Through the consistent practice of self-discipline, human personality can develop into something of real substance. Such gravitas offers great personal power when in service to the commonly held traditional ideals of the community.

“In times of uncertainty, when confusion clouds the minds and hearts of less serious people, such a personality is an important counter-balance to collective emotionality. A slow, serious, heavyweight character settles turbulence and encourages caution and practicality; they set a good example.”

This serious, disciplined personage in service to the community, whose journey reflects, not the power they seek from the outside, but the personal power they have cultivated within is a particularly beautiful way to think of how The Lovers’ lessons can be identified in ourselves and the people around us.

Thus, no matter how dire the news, The Lovers reminds us that Love is not an annual holiday for buying flowers and candy. It is not the exception.

It is a permanent state of the soul, and is our divine birthright. It is there, waiting for us to rediscover it, when we cleanse away the debris of our culture’s fears and projections. Thus we may be freed from our little pond, and leave behind our world of ignorance.

Once concealed, now revealed, let us open our gates to Love.

beautiful and timely. we should be supporting more love, not less, in the world. as the saying goes, it’s not pie; more for someone else doesn’t mean less for me. and politics is not meant to be a team sport, but rather a “checked and balanced” system by which democracy happens… we should, all of us, be seeking the candidates whose platforms speak of love, inclusion, equality, generosity, compassion, protection of the environment, care for the vulnerable; or at least, let us seek candidates whose platforms are not a vector of hate and destruction.

love is a verb as well as a noun. it is what we do…

hi Beth! thanks for another beautifully rendered and insightful commentary! I’m also using the energy of the lovers (which I think might be my year card?? I should re-work the numbers to confirm, but if not that, it’s some other significant card in my current process!) to look at my polarities, my shadow aspects, the inner marriage and all things integrational ~ so glad to hear your wise and deep thoughts! 💖 Victoria
