Because I wanted to finish this three-part series for you, and because it turns out that the Tarot didn’t want to give me an “easy,” phone-it-in card for this week (like it EVER does! Ha!), I am posting this final segment of the Emperor Year material today, and I’ll post the Card of the Week tomorrow. Thanks for understanding, because it is all a bit mind-boggling on my end! – Beth
How Might the Emperor Year Affect YOU?
If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.
Henry David Thoreau
As we have seen from the past two days’ posts, like all of the Tarot cards, The Emperor has many positive and negative potentials. And for the larger-than-life Emperor, his shadow side is hard to miss, especially in world affairs.
When distorted, his Big Daddy ego can be overblown and disrespectful of others. He can become too fond of his power, and treat people as unimportant pawns in his (or her) grand scheme of ascending to the throne of fame and power.
Although his global influence that I discussed yesterday may have stirred up some concerns, especially since his shadow side seems to be rampant right now, it is by the exact same token that this year also gives us a tremendous opportunity. After all, The Emperor expects for us to tap into our inner powers in ways that are of the highest caliber. And yes, I do think we are going to be called on to find and use them.
So how might an Emperor Year affect us personally?
For one thing, he takes life rather seriously, and he can be a tough cookie. But he has big dreams. As I mentioned in Part One, The Emperor is an idealist. And like the quote by Henry David Thoreau, he has not only built his castles in the air, he is building the foundations beneath them, too.
Remember that he is aggressive, a leader, and represents the energy of fathering, as both life-skills teacher and disciplinarian. How might such qualities serve you? Could you be a little more assertive in your dealings?
This could also be a great year to commit to the mastery of your chosen profession, or creative expression.
What worlds do you want to conquer? Are you being challenged to step up as a leader, an innovator, or pioneer? Set big goals and see how powerfully and quickly you can move towards them!
During an Emperor Year, you may be called into a role of greater responsibility — at work, at school, or perhaps in your community or family. Pay attention that you not turn bossy, or tyrannical.
Instead use your power gently, with honesty and integrity. The wise Emperor knows exactly who he is and is at home with the vast reach of his power. He rarely needs to “pull rank” in order to get the job done.
How Do You Lead?
Have you ever thought about your leadership style? How comfortable are you with sharing your authority? Do you find it easy to delegate, or do you sometimes micro-manage or find yourself taking back the task because only you know how to do it “right?”
Or perhaps you prefer to be a follower that quietly defers to someone else’s command. It might feel safer to stay in the background, but as I have said many times, we don’t have that luxury anymore. In the famed words of Clarissa Pinkola Estés, you were made for these times. We need you all in.
So maybe it’s time to assume the mantle of initiative and at least develop a successful team approach to make your ideas take shape. The Emperor knows he is not the Lone Ranger. His success often depends on the strength of his support crew, so that he is freed up to explore, experiment, and break new ground.
Good leaders make the development of a strong, trustworthy team a top priority. And rather than devaluing alternative methods that they themselves might not have chosen, The Emperor rewards innovation, ownership, and accountability from her or his group.
In other words, our noblest inner Emperor is never threatened or defensive in the face of others’ greatness. That’s because we are fully in possession of knowing our own worth.
Taking Orders vs. Respectful Collaboration
Similarly, you may find yourself dealing with other authority figures.
Perhaps you will have to navigate your way through some bureaucratic chain of command. Or you may have issues with the people you report to at work or school. You may also find that it is increasingly difficult to take orders, especially if you have questions about the competence or the validity of someone’s higher ranking role.
Okay, so maybe you really could do a better job. What might you do anyway, to help? There is always a way, even if you don’t get the credit.
And please remember that whoever those people giving the orders are, they are also traveling through the influence of this Emperor Year. That doesn’t mean you become a simpering sycophant, but it does mean that you might get better results if you can find the fine balance of standing fully in your authority, yet also remaining graceful and respectful of theirs.
The Good Father
During this time, you may have reminders that come up regarding your own father, regardless of whether or not he is still living.
Did he participate in your upbringing? Perhaps there was another male in your life who assumed this role for you. How are you like, or unlike him? What advice do you wish he could give you?
In our culture, the father’s role tends to be about loving guidance, protection, and setting the rules and structure that urge us to excellence. How do you offer this to others? Where or from whom might you still receive such blessings in your life?
What boundary issues do you need to resolve once and for all? And in what ways is it time to get better organized? There are lessons to be learned about how to use less emotion, more logic, “play the game,” and make clear, firm decisions that create more stability in your life.
The Emperor Year Interacting With Your Tarot Year
Another way of understanding how The Emperor is going to impact you is to know your personal Tarot year for 2020. He will interact with you in ways that may challenge, teach, or augment your Tarot year’s energy.
Thus, you might meditate on how you’d imagine the Emperor interacting with the archetype of your own Tarot year.
To understand this, suppose your birthday is May 27. This year, you would be having your Hermit Year because 5+27+2020=2052 and 2+0+5+2=9. Nine is The Hermit. (The reduced sum you get should be between 2 and 21, so would correspond to one of the cards of the Major Arcana. If you come up with something else, let me know).
In what ways might the energy of The Hermit connect and relate to The Emperor? At first glance, they may seem very different from one another. But the Emperor’s leadership and drive to excellence could intertwine quite productively with the Hermit’s quiet, spiritual side.
Perhaps this year you will become an adept in some form of meditation. You might find yourself leading others on spiritual retreats. Or the two influences might combine as you achieve recognition as a champion for peace or nonviolence.
The Emperor’s Legacy
Last but not least, in the journey of the Emperor year, you may confront situations that ask how you will use your remaining time on this Earth, especially in terms of leaving a lasting, valuable legacy.
Emperors are often driven to their extraordinary accomplishments because of their issues around their own mortality. It’s easy to understand why when you realize that the Emperor’s complementary card of the Major Arcana is Death (13, which is the Death card = 1+3, which is 4 – The Emperor).
So bearing this in mind, this would be a smart time to update your will, organize your final wishes and other paperwork, and make clear to those you love what you wish to bestow after your time here is over.
Many of you reading this own special decks, magickal tools, and other treasures that the non-magical folks in your family would be completely at a loss to thoughtfully dispose of or disperse, in your absence. So it might be time to make a plan.
This is also an excellent opportunity to get more disciplined in the areas of your life that are important to you.
The Emperor Year urges us to think about what we came into this life to accomplish. What will you do in the days ahead to leave your unique mark in the halls of time?
Use this time to set long-term, even lifetime goals and then begin building the foundation to make them happen.
Meditations and Affirmations As You Journey With The Emperor
You have the privilege of incarnation, enabling you to build, create, or pay forward your fierce love for our world. Goddess knows, we NEED people like you to come forward at this critical crossroads of time and history.
The Emperor can show you how to develop your gifts of discipline, tenacity, inventiveness, and making responsible choices. This is a great year to push past your comfort zone and commit yourself to excellence.
On a regular basis throughout the year, take some time to retreat to a quiet space. Light a candle, perhaps breathe in the scent of incense, (you don’t have to be an Emperor to purchase an Emperor Soul Card Kit), and find your still center in whatever ways are traditional to you.
Either in meditation, or while journaling, consider these questions:
- What do I believe about power? Is it good? Bad? Does it ultimately corrupt?
- Where does power come from?
- Where does my power lie?
- How do I establish my personal authority, especially in a new or unfamiliar situation?
- Who are my role models for the right use of power and authority?
- In what ways am I being called to step into a leadership role now?
- How comfortable am I with the idea of doing so? Why or why not?
- What have I learned about having good boundaries?
- What kinds of power struggles have I ever found myself in? What did I do well? With the benefit of hindsight, what would I wish to change?
- How do I feel about my responsibilities towards others?
- How can I tap into the loving Father energy in my soul?
- How am I like my father? How am I different? If I could ask him anything and know he would answer me candidly and completely, what would I ask?
- If I could have a long chat with some of the most famous or admired leaders in history, who would they be? What would I ask them?
Affirmations for the Emperor Year:
- I choose to embrace the truth of my authority.
- I am sovereign to myself. Therefore, I know it is not unkind to make my boundaries and limits clear and inviolate.
- I am at ease with my ability to stand up and lead where I am needed.
- I make clear, strong decisions with ease.
- I see things from a wide perspective and easily inspire others.
- I live in accordance with the greater good for all, including those yet to be born.
I hope that, in the months ahead, fortified with this three-fold perspective, you will take this opportunity to tap into your own personal greatness and create a legacy of brilliance for a world that surely needs it.
