Money is the blood of the planet. Heal the money and we can heal the world.
Barbara Wilder, Money is Love
In this period of roller-coaster economics, with markets swinging hundreds of points daily, we are visited this week by the Page of Pentacles.
Previously seen at almost this exact time last year, the Pages in the Tarot are often messengers, or catalysts for change. They may indicate important dealings with a literal child (male or female), our own inner child, or simply a new, “beginner’s mind” perspective. They also can indicate taking risks.
But with earthy Pentacles being such a slow and rock-steady force, risk-taking in this suit is more about new directions and manifesting, than recklessness or impulsiveness. We should therefore be on the lookout for important news about money, land, investments, and jobs.
In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, we see a young man focused only on his Pentacle coin, which is almost floating in his hands. Is the coin simply the same color as the sky background, or is it instead transparent?
Behind him is a grove of trees, a newly furrowed field, and he stands in a meadow of flowers. Far away there is a lofty peak, yet for now, he is firmly planted at home. Like the other Pages, he is in transition, first awakening to what is possible.
What lovely timing for those of us who are in the early plowing and planting of Springtime, and good news for all those new graduates now leaving their school days behind and joining the work force.
May’s Big Astrological Shift
As most astrologers will tell you, the big planetary news for this month will occur next Tuesday. On May 15, we’ll see the planet of revolutionary changes and reversals, Uranus, move from bellicose, me-me-me Aries, into Taurus, the Earth sign of money and security.
Uranus hangs out in each of the zodiac signs for about seven years, and its last visit to Taurus was from 1934 to 1942.
And what was going on at that time? Yep, pretty chaotic, and I think it is safe to say that much of that strife was very closely tied to, if not the direct result of, the global economic adversity that followed the 1929 economic crash, as well as the punitive financial cuts imposed on Germany after WWI.
As a result, many authoritarian, extremist regimes came to power: Franco, Mussolini, Hitler, and the establishment of the Vichy government in France.
To put this in context, the wise Diotima Matineia’s most recent blog post focuses on this very important transit:
Back in 1934, Roosevelt had just taken office, and The New Deal was in the works. Hitler and the Nazis solidified their power in June during “The Night of the Long Knives”, assassinating 100 party members to consolidate the party under Hitler, who went on to declare himself Führer in August.
And so, as WW2 approached, geography and borders began to be questioned and redefined.
We are not now, of course, in the middle of a depression. We are in the middle of an economy of unrestrained growth, one that puts short-term gain over long-term survival of our entire species, as we poison and mine the planet of resources with no thought for the future or the cycles of Nature that support all life on Earth.
We live in denial, but on some level we know the truth, and so we live in fear as well.
This bubble of denial will burst, I believe, at some point over the next 7 years. Borders will be questioned and geography will change in dramatic and surprising ways. Flexibility will be important in this time, as will a willingness to serve the land and do your part to heal the web of life.
Money is another point of focus, and we are looking at major changes in banking and currency, particularly crypto-currencies (Uranus rules technology).
It was back in 1934 that the Glass-Steagall Act was passed. It was weakened through the 70s, 80s, and 90s, and finally repealed in 1999, while Uranus was in the rule-breaking sign of its domicile — Aquarius. That repeal has been cited by many economists as a contributing factor in the financial crisis of 2007-2008.
We will likely be coming face-to-face with the need for rules once again.
Financial astrologer Raymond Merriman says that industries related to the sign Uranus is passing through tend to go through a boom-and-bust period.
If you are an investor, you may want to follow him to learn more about the upcoming financial opportunities and dangers.
I can’t think of a more apt message from the Page of Pentacles: “Flexibility will be important in this time, as will a willingness to serve the land and do your part to heal the web of life.”
In addition, as my good friend, astrologer Lynn Hayes notes:
Taurus is also associated with material security and the comfort of wealth, and Uranus in Taurus could create some major changes in the way wealth is distributed around the world.
Uranus is after all a revolutionary, and we could see something radical occur that would change the pattern of increasing disparity of wealth that has been the hallmark of Pluto in Capricorn which tends to consolidate power into the hands of the few.
We are likely to also see radical changes in the way money is handled, including the proliferation of cryptocurrencies (which is already underway) and perhaps the breakdown of our currency systems.
I think it is interesting that the Page came visiting this week, instead of next, when the transition actually happens. However, since the big outer planets are so slow-moving and powerful, we are already experiencing the fading of Aries and the augmentation of the Uranus influence this week.
As another wonderful astrologer friend, Lorna Bevan, observes:
We are already feeling the backwash of next Tuesday’s Uranian shockwaves as the Awakener enters Taurus for the first time in 84 years right on the Taurus New Moon conjunct the Trickster on May 15th. And it’s just the start, as the shakeups and shocks of May act as an eyes-open awakening…
Environmental scientists, biologists, economists, sociologists, ecologists, and other global thought-leaders continue to sound the alarm: the status quo that is based on uninhibited exploitation (of people and planetary resources) is dangerously unsustainable.
In fact, by a number of benchmarks, we may have already passed the so-called “tipping point” for irreversible, catastrophic climate change, with its accompanying cascade of misery, including species loss, famine, pan-epidemics, and geopolitical crises.
But perhaps there is still time. Like the Page of Pentacles, gazing at his treasure, do we still hold the coin of our Mother Earth in our hands? Shall we hold it lightly, with transparency and respect as he does?
Or will Uranus bring a necessary, but disastrous correction to the current, deadly systems of “business as usual?”
Messages from the Page
This may be a good time for improving and expanding your physical well-being, perhaps with a new health regimen, or by finding new ways to celebrate your relationship to the natural world.
And in view of both this card’s appearance, and the upcoming changes that will be starting next week, it would be wise to consider with care how we handle our wealth: our money, our homes, and our jobs.
What do you need to be physically secure? How safe are your savings? How much debt are you carrying? Are your labors and spending in harmony with the good of Mama Gaia and all Her children?
Do you actually know anything about the values and practices of those you are handing your money over to when you order pizza, pick up cheap electronics and clothing, shop for groceries, and even donate to charity?
The Page of Pentacles is the messenger that reminds us we vote with our wallets. Who is profiting from you?
Certainly the global economic woes that continue to cause so much suffering can be traced back to a lack of transparency and honesty from those to whom we have entrusted our fortunes. It is time for those who command the global economies to hold the wealth as this Page does — gently, thoughtfully, and with a focus on the long-term.
With Pluto in Capricorn continuing to grind away at our very definition of wealth and money, and now the double whammy of Uranus’ ingress into Taurus, combined with the impending Pluto return in the United States’ second house, the Page reminds us to pause. It is time to see with clarity what our real, life-honoring assets are.
What do you consider to be your most important resources? Take inventory of what supports you, and how that can be invested to bring long-term gains. What goals around work, finances, health, and home are important for you, in this season of growth?
The Page of Pentacles heralds possibilities and a fresh new approach. Drawing upon the Pentacles’ steadfastness and stamina, it is time for us to claim the stewardship of our rightful prosperity. He invites us to know and wield with careful consideration the power of our wealth.
For every penny in our hands has the potential to bring harm or healing to our world.
