Each of us literally chooses, by his way of attending to things, what sort of universe he shall appear to himself to inhabit.
In a very potent week of astrological change, new beginnings are at hand. Who better, then, to appeal to our higher nature, and guide us with hope, beauty, and love? Let us warmly welcome The Lovers.
On the surface, this card may be assumed to point to matters regarding our romantic love relationships. And often, it does. But this Major Arcana card is more accurately about our own inner journeys, specifically how we make important choices.
In fact, in some older decks, such as the Tarot of Marseilles, The Lovers depicts a man standing between two women, evidently deciding whether he will succumb to exotic temptations, or choose a more respectable (but perhaps less spicy) relationship.
In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, there is no alluring temptress, but instead we are given a more mystical scene, suggesting the choice made in the Garden of Eden. The woman gazes heavenward, the snake and the tree behind her; the man looks to the woman.
Presiding over this moment is an angel, sometimes identified as Raphael, but (based on what we know of the Order of the Golden Dawn’s rituals), it is probably the solar fire angel, Michael.
Thus, the R-W-S deck broadens the message of The Lovers to be, not only choices about a particular relationship or social situation, but how, who, and why we love.
This is the card, in the sequence of the Major Arcana, when we move beyond our self-centeredness, and discover the tantalizing possibilities of Other.
Love Versus Fear
As most students of the Tarot know, the Lovers’ opposite card, based on the numerology and Birth/Personality cards’ relationships is The Devil.
In fact, in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck you can see it is the same couple in both cards.
The Devil of the Tarot shows that we may be enslaved through fears, unconscious habits, and self-sabotage. The goat-headed creature offers a sign of blessing, but the couple stands frozen in loose chains. His temptation is that safety and ease will be ours if we give away our power, refuse growth, and play it safe. Fear teaches us to prefer our suffering to the risk of the unknown.
In The Lovers, also, the presiding magical being offers his blessings. In this case, the couple is fully aware and receptive. They stand with opened arms, in perfect love, in perfect trust. They see life as a beautiful garden, not a pit of condemnation and despair.
Which do you believe in?
We create our reality by the ways that we choose and “attend to things.” Like The Lovers, when we reveal our true, passionate hearts, we are Divinely blessed.
Therefore, to whom and how we give our truest love can reveal the deepest truth about who we are. Who is allowed into our most intimate presence (and why) reveals the extent to which we respect, trust, and honor ourselves.
The First New Moon of Beltane Season
The Summer season of the Celtic year arrived on Beltane, May 1, and this week, we welcome the first Moon of this magical season.
How perfect for The Lovers to come visiting this week! These are the most exquisite days for coupling and love (in the Northern Hemisphere), as fertility, growth, and the sunlight itself reach towards their annual climax at Summer Solstice, only a little over a month away.
Beltane’s New Moon gifts are languid with Venus-ruled Taurus’ sexy, luxurious love of pleasures. It’s a splendid time to set the seeds of our intentions for abundance, wealth, love, and beauty.
Annie Heese at Cafe Astrology writes:
The New Moon in Taurus is a good time to commit to personal goals that express the positive energies of the sign of the Bull. It’s time to enjoy life’s simple and physical pleasures–savor good food, and enjoy activities that bring us in touch with nature and with our bodies.
It’s time to stop and smell the roses and to become more aware of what makes us feel comfortable and secure. This is a good cycle under which to re-evaluate our relationship to money and possessions, as well as to discover what truly makes us happy and fulfilled.
With this potent Taurus energy, we have the chance to make important changes in our lives.
It’s time to make some solid yet realistic plans and to set the stage for reaping the rewards from our new beginnings, as little or big as they may be, in approximately two weeks’ time after the Full Moon occurs.
The energy of this New Moon seeks stability and order, but this is not likely to occur, at least not for very long.
Uranus, the planet of sudden change, shake-ups and rebellion moves into earthy and security oriented Taurus a little over three hours after the New Moon (10:23am EDT).
As discussed previously, Uranus and Taurus are not a good match… In addition Mars, planet of action, anger and assertion will move into Aquarius later that evening (11:55 pm EDT) and form a challenging square with Uranus which will be in effect through May 16.
This is a volatile combination and indicates that May 15-16 will be a tense and unstable time when conflicts or shake-ups are very likely to arise in some shape or form.
So which is it? Luxury and love? Or volatile tensions and conflict?
The Lovers steps into the breach as a reminder of our power to shape, by our faith and love, what our experience of life will be.
Choose As If Your Love Depends On It
The Love that is your very core, that is the gift of life from the Beloved who shapes all change and cycles, may be calling you this week to make an important choice.
This may be regarding a relationship, or something else that you care deeply about. Whatever it is, it is not trivial.
Riding the secret tides of the Dark Moon, the roiling changes in Uranus (not seen since 1934), and Mars’ ingress into Aquarius, this Major Arcana’s appearance is timed as a billboard sized message to pay attention.
Notice how you make decisions and what your reflex attitudes are, when faced with change. Where does your gaze turn, when all has been stripped away and you stand revealed and unfettered, in complete vulnerability?
To what or whom do you give yourself without anxiety or reservations? What would you choose if you had no fear, but simply a heart overflowing with joy and trust?
What would you do if you knew you could not fail?
To make wise choices about your relationships, ask yourself honestly – do the people in your life behave as if they truly value the love that you give? Do you value what you give?
And who returns this deep love to you equally, without qualification or conditions?
You deserve no less than what you offer with all your splendid, adoring heart.
This week, in the name of all that is holy, may the universes we inhabit shine with divine, Earthy, richly blessed Love.
