Within the blessed apple lies
The promise of the Queen!
For from this pentacle shall rise
The orchards fresh and green.
The Earth shall blossom once again
The air be sweet and clean!
O, tidings of comfort and joy!
Comfort and joy!
O, tidings of comfort and joy!

In this week of dark intensity and cosmic power, I was especially curious to see who would be our companion. I admit, it was with a bit of trepidation, as there are many reasons we might have expected an omen of fell times. Instead, promising days merry and bright, we welcome the Queen of Wands.
Court cards can sometimes be symbolic of a kind of energy, but usually they represent a literal person – either someone else, or an aspect of ourselves.
The Queen of Wands offers a complex combination of the passionate, magical fire energy of the Wands suit with the more receptive focus of a Queen. She is famously the only Tarot Queen who sits facing forward, her black cat familiar and her sunflower beside her, with her legs spread apart beneath her sunny gown. She is ready for adventures of any sort.
The Queen of Wands is popular, charismatic, and daring. She tackles problems in a candid, straightforward manner, and she is never afraid to take a risk if it is for something or someone she is committed to.
She is incapable of deceit, cynicism, or manipulation. With her attractive good looks, great sense of humor, and easygoing manner, she has many friends and admirers.
Eat, Drink, and Be Merry
As the holidays bring their round of socializing, parties, and celebration, what a splendid hostess she makes! One of my favorite versions of her is in the Osho Zen Tarot, where she is a smiling, welcoming, volcanic Fire Queen, offering gifts of abundance, food, and light.
But she is not just empty charm. Her vitality is limitless, and her boundless creativity and enthusiasm are contagious. Never one to sit on the sidelines, she is an innovator, willing to give her all to her many projects, plans, and activities.
Leadership comes naturally to her, for she is usually surrounded by people who are inspired by her, and are eager to pitch in.
She is a magnet for excellence, because her aim is not to gather power to herself. Like fire itself, her might grows and spreads by sharing. Thus, she leads by empowering those around her. Her specialty is helping people tap into their own resources of enthusiasm and creativity. She invites us to discover what is best and brightest in us.
A Week of Power
As I mentioned, this week is roiling with intensity. In the wee hours this morning, the ongoing square between Uranus and Pluto was exact again, for the second to last time in its nearly five year showdown. And as another great astrologer, Ralfee Finn, describes them, they are “the two greatest change agents in the astrological system.”
The other big astrological impact this week comes with one of one of the most intensely dark Yuletides I can remember. Sunday is Winter Solstice (in the northern hemisphere), which means it is the longest night of the year and marks the Sun’s ingress into Capricorn.
But this year, brief hours after the moment of Solstice, we are also seeing the deepest dark of a New Moon. And also the same day, rebellious Uranus stations direct, now working his disruptive, unpredictable, revolutionary agenda without encumbrance. This will be followed almost immediately by big changes and even a potentially perilous alignment later next week.
Yet, the Queen of Wands will never succumb to fear. She urges all of us to summon the great inner fortitude of our courage, commitment, and creativity.
Despite possible difficulties or dangers, she would never trade her freedom for comfort or “safety.” She would probably quote you Helen Keller, “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.”
Turn On Your Love Light
The antidote for dark spells is to shine with your own truest, funniest, most daring brilliance. We have received a sparkling invitation to shine with good cheer and joy. Indeed, isn’t that precisely what this time of year is all about?
So, enjoy what likely to be an unusually inventive, productive time. Let your passionate desires spark your actions.
Gather with friends, and amp up the fun factor. You may find yourself stepping into a leadership position, or hosting parties, events, or important gatherings.
Yours now is the power to inspire others, not by your words, but by your example and how you live.
Although much sorrow has dogged us this year, with this Solstice and New Moon, a doorway for new beginnings opens.
Let us blaze brightly with the infinite warmth, courage, and generosity of the Queen of Wands.
Hail and welcome the fulfillment of her promise of tidings of comfort and joy.
May we merry meet, and merry part, and merry meet again!
