Dark of the Moon,
Dark of the Moon,
Plant a seed tonight.
Dark of the Moon,
What we envision
Will come to be
By the Full Moon’s light.
Get ready. This is a whopper of a New Moon (Sunday, March 30 at 2:45 p.m. EDT), prompting many astrologers to call it the most important New Moon in decades.
Not only is it the second New Moon in a single calendar month, making it a “Black Moon,” New Moons are when we set our intentions for the coming lunar cycle. And the Aries New Moon is typically an ideal moment to plant our seeds of focus and desire, not just for the lunation, but for the coming year.
But as Diane Lang, of Libra Seeking Balance writes, “Despite all the ‘go for it’ signals on this New Moon at 09° 59′ Aries on 30 March, 2014 at 11:46 a.m. PDT, actually achieving liftoff may take some serious effort. Driving the need for action is Uranus in Aries conjunct the luminaries. However both Jupiter in Cancer and Pluto in Capricorn are putting obstacles in the way as both square the New Moon-Uranus stellium.”
She explains, “Usually the Aries New Moon following the equinox (Spring in the northern latitudes, Autumn in the southern) marks the true beginning of the zodiac year when the possibilities seem endless… [But] now we have all manner of expectations from family (Jupiter in Cancer) and those in authority (Pluto in Capricorn) to contend with.
“It may seem like everyone and their uncle has a better idea of how to move forward, thwarting our own in the process. The resentment potential is extremely high. This is an excellent time to contemplate the difference between being assertive and being aggressive. A calm, direct, polite manner is far more likely to get positive results than a rude, abusive one.”
Diane illuminates this point when she explains, “I like to take a look at what Mars is doing in this chart because Mars rules Aries. At this time Mars is retrograde in diplomatic Libra trine to Venus in Aquarius and exactly semi-sextile to Saturn in Scorpio.
“What this says to me is a thoughtful, low key approach will produce far, far better results. Mars is definitely not at his best now and inclined towards being passive-aggressive. He is in no shape for an all out attack. Be tactful, kind and gentle with loved ones.”
The Bigger Picture
This New Moon offers a preview of the potentially life-changing April 20-23 Grand Cross, in which Mars will retrograde back to oppose Uranus and square the Jupiter-Pluto opposition. Like the Sun, Mars is a fiery, impulsive planet—especially when frustrated by its retrograde passage through peace-loving Libra.
By mid-April, bracketed by eclipses on the 15th and 29th (more about that in my next post) the Grand Cross will trigger the results of whatever is now being initiated. Throughout April, emotions will run high—necessitating forethought and careful attention to our words and actions. If you’re truly ready to charge ahead with something, go for it—just be aware that with Mars retrograde through May 19, progress could be slowed.
Most important right now is to get clear on your goals, and recommit to whatever truly makes your heart sing.
Check in – this may have changed. If you’ve been conforming to rules or limitations that no longer make sense to you, develop an exit strategy. Dare to be selfish—especially if you always strive to make others happy. If you’re not ready for a big change, find a harmless way to misbehave—stay out late dancing, take a spontaneous vacation. Do whatever it takes to feel more alive and fulfilled.
