Tarot Card of the Week, Feb. 24-March 2, 2014: Two of Wands

Two of WandsShould I stay or should I go now?
Should I stay or should I go now?
If I go there will be trouble
And if I stay it will be double…
~ The Clash

With interesting magical timing, the same card we had for the late January New Moon pops up again for this week’s New Moon. This week, the Two of Wands makes an encore visit.

As I have written before, Twos portray choices, duality, this and/or that. And Wands are associated with the element of Fire, ruling over action, creativity, energy, passion, and power.

As we can see, the wand behind the wealthy merchant is secured to his castle wall. He has turned his back on it, and looks off to the sea in the distance.

He holds a globe in one hand. In his other hand, he holds the second wand, which rests on a parapet decorated with white lily and red rose – a motif of intertwined purity and passion that we see prominently highlighted in a number of the cards, including The Magician, The Hierophant, and the Ace of Pentacles.

The Merchant and the Priestess

I always imagine that the two wands here create a sort of doorway, or a magical threshold. The High PriestessThey also hearken back to the columns in the biggest Two of the deck, the High Priestess. She sits between two columns named Boaz (the column on our left) and Jachin (the column on our right), which are from the fabled temple of Solomon.

Most scholars agree that Jachin means, “to establish,” while Boaz is not as clear and has been interpreted as strength, boldness, or perhaps fleetness. It also has been described as representing the unknowable.

So when we look at our merchant on the wall with his two Wands, we see that the Jachin-like one is bolted onto the stone. Strength, security, and establishment are clearly represented here.

In his left hand, though, he holds up the wand of Boaz. What shall he call upon it to create? Or will he remain on his wall, gazing at the globe in his right hand?

What is his true desire? Does he want to stay where it is comfortable and secure? Or go back out into the world and the unknown?

Magical Timing

As usual, the Tarot seems to be in full agreement with the current astrology. Mercury retrograde ends on Friday (remember that the time of switching is likely to be the most disruptive).

But before the dust can settle, on Saturday’s New Moon, Mars, the planet of action, turns retrograde. Then, the very next day, Saturn, the taskmaster of time and discipline, turns his back and retrogrades as well.

My friend, astrologer Elisabeth Grace makes it quite clear, writing, “This week brings an interesting mix of startling revelations and upsets, against a cosmic backdrop that may not be sure if it’s coming or going… but quite certain it’s ripe for change. Oh, and there’s a New Moon on Saturday, too. Change!

Your Challenge: Should You Choose to Accept It

What change is calling you out of your comfort zone? What established security do you need, and what will happen if you turn away from it?

If a globe of the world was your tool for divination, what message might it have for you?  With the world at your feet, when you pause and listen to your heart, what is your honest desire?

There is much now to encourage enjoying the security you’ve worked so hard to establish. But there is also plenty of juju pulling you out of your castle and launching a new adventure.

Which will it be?

Oh Beth, what a wondrous post! “What is your HONEST DESIRE”– what a potent phrase.I could contemplate JUST THAT phrase for a long long time.. Ken and I are pursuing our MOST HONEST desires.. and they led us to the mountains.. This is such a heady time for me.. I feel such a release form sooo much– your readings for me the last few years helped me through some of the tougher decisions!! HOW DO PEOPLE LIVE WITHOUT TAROT AND ASTROLOGY for guidance??Do they just listen to their neighbors?????LOL!!

Change is inevitable..stagnation is just SO not an option for me, ever. I hope not for too many others either..Pick up the challenge and listen to this card!!!!!!
