Blessings of the Flowering Moon in Scorpio

Lunar eclipsesThe Moon disappearing for a few moments is like a veil being pulled back, or a doorway opening, that leads to another realm of possibilities.
~ Astrologer Eric Francis

The Moon reached Her juicy fullness this afternoon at 3:57pm, Eastern time, and will also be undergoing a partial eclipse, which will be visible in parts of the Eastern Hemisphere (but not in North America).

At its peak, less than 1.5 percent of the Moon’s diameter will be immersed in the Earth’s umbral shadow, making this a somewhat underwhelming astronomical event.

Not so astrologically, though.

When the Sun is in the sign of Taurus, the Full Moon is in Scorpio. This Moon is all about intensity and passion, the impulse that pulls us into the deepest part of our soul and forces us to experience life in the most profound way possible.

With an eclipse, we may experience sudden change. This may be uncomfortable, or else — depending on our attitude — may bring the recognition that anything can happen — not just difficulty, but dreams that can be realized.  Unexpected doors may open, visions may manifest, unaccustomed clarity may come.

An eclipse on the Scorpio Moon can wipe the emotional slate clean, erasing old sins and grudges. Taurus’ simplicity can help us stay grounded. This brief window of time has the potential to spark transformations that are necessary for survival, and ultimately, for our happiness.

My good friend, astrologer Lynn Hayes, reminds us that Full Moons occur when the Moon opposes, or is opposite, the Sun. She notes that, “It is the lunar consciousness that prevails. Emotions run higher during the Full Moon, and we have greater access to the underworld of our psyche with the Full Moon in Scorpio.”

Lynn offers a very helpful explanation of why eclipses can have such a profound impact upon us (Hint: think nodes!).

And another of my other favorite astrologers, Rhea Wolf, offers additional insight into avoiding difficulties and making the most of this powerful influence.

But wait! There’s more!

In the ancient Greek traditions, the Athenians honored Artemis on this Full Moon of April, which was the month of Mounichion. At this time, She is celebrated as both the Goddess of wild things and as the Moon Goddess.

The energy of the “lusty month of May” is fast becoming irresistible, since the Moon is in the sign that rules sexuality, while the Sun is in earthy, sensual Taurus, which is the sign ruled by Venus. We can’t help but know that fiery Beltane is less than a week away!

Thus, this is sometimes called the Witches’ Moon, the Moon of Balance, as well as the Growing Moon.

pinkmoonMany call this the Flower Moon, of which Z. Budapest writes, “The clouds roll away, the wind grows soft and warm. As the Full Moon of Taurus sails the skies, her gentle light glimmers upon a world full of flowers. In the north, the last of the fruit trees are filling the air with soft perfume…Now the trees leaf out in full vigor, and youths and maidens go into the wood to lie upon the green grass and bring in the May. All the world is in love, blessed by the smiling Flower Moon.”

It is also known as the Pink Moon, perhaps because the moss pink or wild ground phlox (Phlox subulata) is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the Spring.

Other names for this Full Moon are the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and, among some coastal First Nations tribes, the Full Fish Moon, when the shad come upstream to spawn.

Whatever you may wish to call it, let this Full Moon’s energy flow through you today, empowering you to clear away the stubborn, hidden places where fears and regrets may be scorpionically coiled.

Ask for the support of those you trust and love. Fall in love with your own life, for this is the perfect day to begin Spring cleaning your spirit.

May the parting veils of this Moon offer you profound doorways of possibility and transformation.

And as always, may your rites be richly blessed.
