Hear the words of prudence, give heed unto her counsels, and store them in thine heart; her maxims are universal, and all the virtues lean upon her; she is the guide and the mistress of human life.

This week begins with the holiday America dedicates to our working class heroes and the ongoing struggle on behalf of fair labor practices and justice in the workplace. So it is fitting that we take a breather from the Major Arcana intensity we’ve been experiencing, and welcome the Page of Pentacles.
The Court Cards are the people cards in the Tarot, usually indicating actual people in our lives (or aspects of ourselves). And the Pages in the Tarot are often messengers, or catalysts for change. They may indicate important dealings with a literal child (male or female), our own inner child, or simply a new, “beginner’s mind” perspective. They also can indicate taking risks.
But with earthy Pentacles being such a slow and steady force, risk-taking in this suit is more about new directions and manifesting, than recklessness or impulsiveness.
In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, the background shows a grove of trees, a newly plowed field, and the Page standing in a meadow of flowers. It would seem that he is in transition, in a period of possibilities.
In the distance the lofty peaks beckon, yet for now, the Page is focused only on his Pentacle coin, which is almost floating in his hands. Is the coin simply the same color as the sky background, or is it instead transparent?
What perfect timing, as students begin a new school year after the Labor Day holidays. Summer is ending and it’s time to settle down, get serious, and perhaps focus on learning new skills that will support us later.
Our wise blog friend and astrologer Lorna Bevan notes, “The week gets off to a productive start on Monday under a square from Venus in Cancer to Saturn in late Libra. Time to make a determined push before September 19th when Uranus and Pluto meet in their 2nd exact square.”
Thus, we might be on the lookout for important news about money, land, investments, and jobs.
Also, this week will see the Obama-Biden ticket affirmed amongst plenty of hoopla in Charlotte, NC. There will be plenty of rhetoric about the economy and jobs.
But beautiful Charlotte is also home to the Bank of America, one of the big culprits in the 2008 financial meltdown. Those losses that are still dogging millions of American families, as well as the wider global economic predicament, are due, in large measure, to a widespread lack of transparency and honesty about where our wealth comes from, and who it is given to.
Not so with the Page of Pentacles. He invites us to handle our resources as he does — lightly, openly, with great care and respect.
He is the antithesis of the infamous closed door scheming of world politicians, bankers, and financiers. His prosperity is made in the light of day. It comes, not from tricky number-crunching or PAC gifts, but from honest labor, and actual physical value.
His is the abundance whose source is profound respect for the Earth herself. If we do not invest our labor into healing and preserving our benevolent, fruitful planet, no economic plan, or political promises will save anyone. And it is no joke.
This week, you might do well to review what matters most to you. To what (or whom) do you give the highest value? How do you prioritize the importance of your job? Your health? Home? Family? Friendships? How do you strike the balance between freedom and security?
Then, consider: how much do you actually invest in these matters that you care about? How careful and deliberate, like the Page, are you when it comes to protecting and cultivating what is of the highest value to you?
The Sun and Mercury in Virgo this week offer a fresh opportunity to improve our physical well-being, perhaps with a new health regimen, or by finding new ways to celebrate our relationship to the natural world. New school or work hours might also mean it’s time to reevaluate our time resources, too. What new work routine lies ahead for you?
How do you define success? What do you need, to feel more expansive, abundant and still be on solid footing? What is your ultimate dream in practical terms, and what are you doing now, to make it come true?
Consider with prudence what resources are already given to you, and use the Pentacles’ steadfastness and stamina to help you invest and grow what you most value.
The Page offers us the opportunity to make positive changes, to solve problems, and bring into the real world what we envision. May your care and labor be richly rewarded.
