Tarot Card of the Week – Feb. 13-19, 2012: Ace of Pentacles

Both abundance and lack exist simultaneously in our lives, as parallel realities. It is always our conscious choice which secret garden we will tend.
~ Sarah Ban Breathnach

This week, we have a visit from an infrequent, but most welcome friend – the Ace of Pentacles.

The Ace of Pentacles represents the power of the Earth, since the Pentacle is a magical tool that is ruled by the element of Earth and North. The Disc or Pentacle may represent a sacred shield, a coin, or even a scrying mirror of destiny. But its power is to manifest in physical reality that which your imagination (Air), desire (Fire), or heart (Water) may long for.

As with all Aces, this card holds the full potential of its suit. Each of the Aces shows a hand emerging from a cloud, offering the symbol of the suit as a gift. This one is within a garden, that numinous place where the will of Nature and humanity work in harmony. The flowering hedge offers shelter, fertility, and protection, with the round garden gate perhaps an echo of the wreath in The World card.

Interestingly, this is the only Ace that does not portray the Yods, the golden symbols of the Divine spark of creativity and genesis. Tarot expert Rachel Pollack hypothesizes this is because, “The Earth in its completeness and solid reality, bears its own magic.”

This time of year, those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are growing restless for Spring. If you’re like me, gardening catalogs are pouring into your mailbox, promising the perfect Eden in your own backyard.  What lush, beautiful paradise do you envision?

For the many, many people who are out of work in this difficult economy, or who are struggling financially, there is tremendous hope in this card.  This is the hand that offers material, practical blessings.

What new steps are you considering, regarding the improvement of your health, home, or financial well-being?  Now is the time to do it, for you have assistance from Mystery.

There is a seed of possibility that is coming to life, and which could take almost any form. It might simply be that exquisite pleasure of being comfortably at home in your physical body.  It could indicate the beginning of new work projects, jobs, or income streams, as well as a need to focus on practical matters.  It could also be quite tangible. Perhaps it is a financial gift, home improvement, or maybe a new regimen for wellness.

This week, there is a potential for a new start, one that has in its very structure the elements for a successful outcome. In what ways might you introduce a new level of comfort, beauty and solidity to your life?  How can you use this opportunity to improve your sense of abundance and security?  Is it time to begin a new, happier relationship with money?

How can you turn your current work situation into the career of your dreams? (As it happens, I’ll have lots more to say about this soon, as I have a new teleclass coming up that focuses on precisely this concern.)

This Ace is a bit conservative, and it does not give you a green light for wild risk-taking, maxing out credit cards, or other extreme behavior.  But if you are willing to get to work, very good things are likely.

Build a strong foundation and plant the seeds that nurture you, for you can expect a fruitful harvest ahead. Ground yourself in work that you love and in the body that brings you pleasure. Align yourself with the beautiful Earth Herself.

As you now tend your garden of abundance, so shall the one of lack surely perish.

I am so glad to see this card! Last week I was sick and couldn’t really make much progress on all the work things I had planned to do. But the Ace offers me good health to move forward on these projects / this work that I have been talking about as creating a garden to nurture my fire.

thanks for the insight, Beth 🙂 I have been pondering about two ideas, one old and one new, both are tightly related to future living and financial arrangements. With ace of pentacles energy, I will go with the one I know more about and with less risk first 🙂 thank you again and hope you have a good week also

And Mel – love how this is maybe resolving last week’s Two of Swords in a grounded, pragmatic way!

yes it is. last week I was very much torn. I didn’t want to choose between the two options. But as the week went by, I came to realize that there were no other options but these two left for me and now I know which one to choose 🙂 It’s so true what you said last week “We may vacillate between choice A and choice B, when what we really want is “None of the above.” thanks so much!!

Oh, this card makes me happy. I have started house hunting, and going out to see what is there, and what will meet our family needs. Still worried about getting a mortgage and buying in this economy, but it would be so nice to be in a house again w/ a garage, and a backyard with clothesline. Am hoping the right house, in the right neighborhood, and at the right price comes along before summer’s end.

Oddly enough, I didn’t see this post until Tuesday afternoon. I just got back from the bookstore where I purchased Julia Cameron’s new book “The Prosperous Heart.” As I was reading at the bookstore, I was thinking “I don’t have time to do this.” But the more I read, the more I realized I needed to MAKE time. How can I make my living as a creative person until I deal with my own financial insecurities and deep-seated, unhelpful beliefs?
