Self-reverence, self-knowledge, self-control –
These three alone lead life to sovereign power.
~ Alfred Lord Tennyson
At last, we move ahead in our journey through the houses of the birth chart, arriving this month at the Tenth House. Ruled by Saturn and Capricorn, it is a powerful indicator of our life’s destiny in terms of career and calling.
Astrologer Molly Hall calls it the House of Lifetime Achievement.
She writes, “While the Sixth House defines how you make a living, with jobs and income streams, the Tenth House is about your life’s work. It’s what you look back on, as your legacy in the world. The Tenth House is also associated with the Midheaven (on the Tenth House cusp). It’s an expression of your public persona, how you’re seen as a figure on the world stage.
“The dynamics found here show how you fulfill, over time, your destiny to become an authority in some area. Saturn’s mastery is hard-won, and the rewards of this house come through careful progress over time.”
She explains, “With its Capricorn signature, the Tenth House deals with the material realm. The insights in this house show how you act in the real world, how you get things done. Because that often requires an inner authority, the full expression of this house is a power that is bedrock solid. It is achieved from experience, wisdom, perseverance and a cumulative history of success.”
Terry Nazon adds her perspective, reminding us that the Tenth house is ruled by Saturn, who is Father Time and the task-master. He shows us the pinnacle of what we achieve with our lives. It rules our ambitions and how we hunger for power, authority, respect, fame and fortune. It is the house of ruling over others, or being ruled over by others, depending on your chart.
In the Tenth House, we are shown what we can become, who we become. In it, we see our career, reputation, status, wisdom, and what the fulfillment of our dreams and aspirations looks like.
She also notes that the Tenth House is also called the house of “downfalls.” It illuminates much about our ability to accept responsibilities, and assume a role of power and authority appropriately without abusing our role. How we use power can either be benevolent, or can havoc for those less fortunate, or those under our influence.
Terry writes, “Here you feel the consequences of your actions, with blockages, bad luck, falls from grace, discomfort and reap the bad karma of your actions or misdeeds. It is a house of corrections. It’s where you are hardest on yourself.”
She adds, “Sometimes we find afflictions to the Tenth house in those people who are mean-spirited and use and abuse others. In this respect it’s a karmic house because it is ruled by the disciplinarian Saturn.”
Like all of the Houses, depending upon the planets in it, it is strengthened or undermined, depending on our particular natal birth charts.
