Tarot Card of the Week – October 17-23, 2011: Two of Cups

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing
and rightdoing there is a field.
I’ll meet you there.
~ Rumi

For the third time this year, we receive a visit from the Two of Cups. Why is it being so insistent with its message of friendship, heart connection, and alliance?  Is the third time the charm?

This is a gentle card that shows the moment when two people connect. As a Cups suit card, this connection is emotional.  The Two follows the “I Am” of the Ace, becoming the feelings that arise from “We Are.”

It is interesting to note that this is one of Pamela Colman Smith’s “stage” cards, in which the ground these figures stand upon is a straight line, making it look more like a scene on a stage than a natural outdoor setting.  What drama does it depict? Probably the oldest one of all – boy meets girl.

Here we are shown the duality of man/woman, active/passive, yin/yang, self/other. The woman stands quietly as the young man steps forward, reaching out to take her cup or even to touch her. What might such a caress ignite?

In the background, there is a house with a red roof – almost identical to the house that appears in the Ten of Cups, the culmination of the suit. The happy ending is already foreshadowed here.

This card certainly echoes The Lovers card, where instead of the solar lion, the couple is blessed by the angel between them. Two hearts meet through the grace of the Divine. They move past the me/you, and become one.

The last time this card came up, we were in the midst of the huge political upheavals happening throughout the Middle East.  Now we see similar unrest and the call for change spreading across the globe, including the growing alliances of the “Occupy” groups that began in the United States. There are big issues being questioned, and people are connecting on a grassroots basis.

What connections are you making this week? There could hardly be a better invitation for finding harmonious expression together.

Could this be the stirrings of new love? Or might you be at the start of an important alliance, based on mutual respect and understanding. What partnerships do you seek that are heart-centered and on equal footing?

Is there someone, perhaps in your business or social dealings, that you might like to know better? This may be a great opportunity for your acquaintanceship to blossom into something special.

It is also the possibility of reconciliation within our own divided nature. How do you hold and balance the animus and anima within your own soul?

This card may offer a blessing to your relationships – with self or others; new, old, and yet to be. Our sense of isolation is not only painful, it is false.  In addition to the wisdom of Rumi, I offer this illumination from Joanna Macy:

“I used to think that I ended with my skin, that everything within the skin was me and everything outside the skin was not. But now you’ve read these words, and the concepts they represent are reaching your cortex, so ‘the process’ that is me now extends as far as you.”

May those many magical meetings between us be richly blessed this week.

Like Mel, I see this in my life as more of a balance within. I’m great with the girly, feminine, nurturing side. But standing up for myself? Taking charge? Advocating for my own life? Um, could I just put that off indefinitely, please? I’m working on manifesting it in a healthy, balanced way. Baby steps.
