Tarot Card of the Week, October 10-16, 2011: Seven of Pentacles

The thankful receiver bears a plentiful harvest.
~William Blake

Visiting us again, after its recent appearance at the first harvest of Lughnassadh, we welcome the Seven of Pentacles as the deepening energy of Samhain’s final harvest approaches. It is also the week of the Full Moon in Aries.

As most people may be aware, seven is considered a “lucky” number, but why? Traditionally, it is a number of magic, spirituality and initiation into a deeper level of Mystery. For starters, there are seven main chakras, the human body is said to renew itself on a cellular level every seven years, each phase of the moon is seven days long, there are seven colors in the spectrum, and seven notes in the musical scale.

Thus, as Philip and Stephanie Carr-Gomm discuss in their companion guide to the DruidCraft Tarot, “Contemplating the existence of these sevens, we realize we are touching upon an essential structure of both the macrocosm and the microcosm…”

And of course the Pentacles are the practical matters in our lives that have to do with money, health, home, and work.

What a perfect time of year for this card to appear, for it depicts the young man pausing and preparing for his own final harvest. The vine is laden with fruit, the Pentacles of abundance. He has done everything he can to tend this garden. Now, he gazes with tender appreciation at what he has worked for. He seems to be considering whether or not his results are ready for gathering.

Ripening is a process that happens in the fullness of time. We humans love our illusion that we can control and manage time. But no matter how precisely we may try to schedule and measure it, we are all, in the end, subject to the laws and rhythms of our Mother Earth and Her cosmic neighbors.

There is only so much that we can control with our labor and diligence. And then the rest is up to Nature. The young man has done his part, but now he has no choice but to surrender to the Earth’s own wisdom.

And doing so, he invites the good fortune of the Sevens.

You may have noticed that often on the New Moons, I post a little chant that I learned at SpiralHeart Witchcamp years ago:

Dark of the Moon
New beginnings
Dark of the Moon
Plant a seed tonight
Dark of the Moon
What we envision
Will come to be
By the Full Moon’s light.

Now, in this week’s Full Moon, what seed of your vision is coming to be?

In what ways might you now allow time’s passages to support you? How is time your ally, not your enemy?

Before you reap the well-deserved rewards of your labors, are you being invited to pause a moment? Look at what you are creating and take stock. If you need to fine-tune before the completion, you still can, but the end is in sight.

Perhaps this is the time for you to consider what you have learned or what you might change next time. But whatever you have been working towards, it is now bearing fruit and almost ready for harvest.  Pause, reflect, and give thanks for the bounty before you.

What was once only potential is now in the final stages of its completion. May the results be abundant and blessed.

By “coincidence,” the 7 of pentacles turned up in a personal reading I did yesterday. I like your suggestion to pause a moment and take stock…

    Hi, Maria! ♥
Yes! And adding this one to last week’s other “pause” card, I think we are getting some important messages to reflect, and then proceed in more organic and sustainable ways!
