The Doorway of the Eighth House

There’s a rebirth that goes on with us continuously as human beings. I don’t understand, personally, how you can be bored. I can understand how you can be depressed, but I just don’t understand boredom.
~ Dustin Hoffman

In August, we arrive at the last of the so-called “social houses” in the astrological chart, the ones that rule our direct interactions with others and our social sphere.

The Eighth House is one that is complex and deep. As the Fourth House guides the transition from our individual personalities to who we are in community, the Eighth House sets the tone for how we move from our social context to the our interaction with the Universal. It is the doorway to the aspects of our soul identity in the chart.

So, this doorway involves issues around death, rebirth, what we share, how we let go. Ruled by Scorpio, it is a House of mysteries, and it challenges us to face the deep, juicy, sometimes difficult parts of our psyche.

Astrologer Molly Hall writes, “The Eighth House is one of hidden mysteries, the biggest of which is the final transformation, death. It’s where you find intense emotional wells, the secrets of the soul that unfold over a lifetime.

“Often we fear what lies in the Eighth House, partly because of its power to end our old way of being. Compulsions, obsessions, primal entanglements — these all require serious grappling with the core to untangle. The Eighth House concerns those life issues that we’re often at the mercy of, that feel fated, and therefore, hard to resolve.”

Maybe, therefore, it is not a coincidence (as I’d first thought) that during this time, I am going away on a personal retreat.

I will be offline for about a week, although, have no fear, I will still pull and post our Card of the Week on Monday.

When I return, we’ll continue with our examination of the issues that come up in the Eighth House. Some of which I expect I will be intimately exploring in the days ahead.

See you soon!
