Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.

How very magical!
After putting in his most recent appearance during the previous Solstice (Winter for the Northern Hemisphere, Summer in the lands below the equator), the Knight of Wands comes riding back in time for this week’s Solstice celebrations.
In the Northern Hemisphere, Springtime (ruled by the Element of Air) now transitions to Summer, which belongs to the element of Fire. The suit of Wands is usually associated with Fire in the Tarot, and the Knights traditionally correspond to the element of Air. So we welcome the Air of Fire, the perfect agent for this powerful shift.
Things promise to be intense, as the Mr. Hot Stuff of the Tarot bursts upon the scene! The Knight of Wands is the daring champion who launches into every challenge with passion and a desire for adventure.
In the R-W-S deck, his horse rears up, eager to burst into action, dashing off to the quest. The plumes from the Knight’s helmet and shirt look like flames, and he wears the symbol of the salamander – mystical creature of fire.
Unlike the salamanders that also appear on the King of Wands’ robe, however, his are open, without the tail connected to the mouth, representing incomplete plans, loose ends. He is the risk-taker, whereas the King has arrived at his mastery and protects his accomplishments.
The Knight of Wands is spontaneous, hot-headed, charismatic, quick to laugh or anger, and a creative blaze of activity. He (or, look closely and notice he may well be a “she”) is often charming, and pulsing with sexual energy.
While he may have difficulty with commitments and can be unpredictable, he absolutely takes loyalty, honor and integrity to heart. He is fearless and is a true heroic figure.
After the last two weeks of powerful Majors urging us to pause and receive the gifts of stillness, healing and surrender, the only slowing down we are now likely to encounter is the seeming “stopping” of the Sun. Solstice comes from the Latin “solstitium,” from sol, which means “sun” and -stitium, “a stoppage,” since for several days it appears that the sun’s arc from sunrise to sunset is unchanged.
It is as if the Universe has been saying, “Ready. Set…” and now, “GO!”
Riding the powerful energy surge of this Solstice time between the three eclipses, this Knight invites travel, adventure, and perhaps a new creative project. He is eager to launch into new, wild, uncharted territory. His is the quest rooted in deep passion; the driving Life Force itself fuels his journey.
In what ways is it now time for you to burst forth in a new, passionate endeavor? What challenges are you longing to tackle head-first? In what ways are you being asked to shake things up, or step up as an agent of change? What amazing achievements might now be possible?
Do bear in mind that he is not known for his practicality or minding the details. So after the initial excitement, you might need to make an extra effort to focus and follow through, and temper any impulse to over-react or create unhelpful drama.
But if you ever needed a bold, brilliant champion on your side, you have one now. Is this you?
Speed, focus, daring – these are your allies. Wherever you live, whether this is the cusp of the highest light, or the deepest dark, the tide turns now. Now you are called to tap into the fiery places that energize you and fill you with passion. Leave the commonplace and the slaves of the ordinary in the dust.
It is time to streak ahead towards your desire!
