The House of Love Given

If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. Wherever you are — if you are following your bliss, you are enjoying that refreshment, that life within you, all the time.

~  Joseph Campbell

I know I haven’t been posting as systematically as usual here, as I am still catching up from being out of town, plus putting the finishing touches on the workshops I am offering in the next several weeks (if you get my newsletter, you know about these!).

But it’s not from lack of enthusiasm, because there are so many wonderful things to explore in the Fifth House!

Astrologer Dana Gerhardt calls the Fifth House, “The House of Love Given.”  Isn’t that gorgeous?

She writes, “This is the field of creativity and self-expression. It rules children of all kinds: physical offspring, as well as ‘brain children’ — artistic creations or projects you love to work on. Also rules romance, love affairs, fun and amusements. Your talents, hobbies and pleasures.

Within your 5th house lives a wild spirit too. It wants to shake up your sleepy life. It wants to stimulate your ecstasy for being in the moment.”

This is your purest bliss!

Dana likens the Fifth House to that wonderful movie, Chocolat.  In it, she tells us, “Vianne has an affair with a gypsy. She is clairvoyant too, knowing exactly which chocolate remedy – the rose creme, the chocolate seashells, or the cacao and chili drink – a person’s soul might be craving.

“Your 5th house likewise holds a gypsy spirit that knows just how to make your heart sing.

“Traditional astrology gives this house a double association with Venus, planet of pleasures and passions. Venus “joys” in this house, which means her natural tendencies find fortunate expression here.

“The Chaldean order of planets, which assigns Saturn to the 1st house and Jupiter to the 2nd, gives fun-loving Venus to the 5th. It is well known that when transits or progressions energize the 5th house, people do uncharacteristic things. They have affairs. They buy flashy new cars. They dream of running away to the circus. They behave, in short, like children.”

She continues, “There is vital life force energy in the 5th house. This is a natural progression in the wheel of the houses. The emerging self is given a supportive container through 4th house home and family.

“When the emotional life is thus nurtured, power gathers. There is energy to create. Or procreate. There is enthusiasm for life. One is vibrant and radiant.

“This may be why modern astrologers assign rulership of the 5th house to the Sun. The Sun has star quality. It says ‘I am here!’ It needs to express itself dynamically. It wants to feel special. It wants to love and be loved.

“Do we really need to choose either Venus or the Sun when judging which matters more in this house? It might be wiser to keep both in mind. In the 5th, you must express your Sun without apology. And you must pursue what brings your Venus joy.”

Lots more to say about this, so stay tuned!

Meantime, have yourself a blissful and lucky Friday the 13th!

What does it mean to have nothing in the fifth house?

  • May 14, 2011, 8:08 am Beth

Hi, Sara.. I must emphasize that I am not an astrologer; in fact that is why I am spending this time exploring the Houses – so I can learn about them, too!
So if there is a real astrologer reading this, I hope you will please share your views.
My amateur take, though, is that if there are no aspects in your Fifth House, it is neutral. Nothing is amping it up, true, but nothing is challenging it, either.
Literally, it is wide open for you to develop, play with, explore and learn from.
    Any other opinions, folks?
