We’ve been looking at what we can expect this year by examining it through the lens of the Tarot, for 2011 is the Tarot Year of the Emperor. Yesterday, we examined what his influence might be on a global level.
On a personal basis, this is a great year to commit to the mastery of your chosen profession. What worlds do you want to conquer? Are you being challenged to step up as a leader, an innovator, or pioneer? Set big goals and see how powerfully and quickly you can move towards them!
During an Emperor Year, you may be called into a role of greater responsibility — at work, at school, or perhaps in your community or family. Pay attention that you not turn bossy, or tyrannical. Instead use your power gently, with honesty and integrity. The wise Emperor knows exactly who he is and is at home with the vast reach of his power. He rarely needs to “pull rank” in order to get the job done.
Have you ever thought about your leadership style? How comfortable are you with sharing your authority? Do you find it easy to delegate, or do you sometimes micro-manage or find yourself taking back the task because only you know how to do it “right?”
The Emperor knows he is not the Lone Ranger. His success often depends on the strength of his support team, so that he is freed up to explore, experiment, and break new ground. Good leaders make the development of a strong, trustworthy team a top priority. And rather than devaluing alternative methods they themselves might not have chosen, the Emperor rewards innovation, ownership and accountability from his group.
Similarly, you may find yourself dealing with other authority figures. Perhaps you will have to navigate your way through some bureaucratic chain of command. Or you may have issues with the people you report to at work or school. You may find that it is increasingly difficult to take orders, especially if you have questions about their competence or the validity of their superior role.
Okay, so maybe you really could do a better job. What are you doing to make that happen?
As the Empress Year was defined by the energy of the Great Mother, the Emperor is the Good Father. So during this time, you may have reminders that come up regarding your own father, whether or not he is still living. How are you like, or unlike him? What advice do you wish he could give you?
In our culture, the father’s role tends to be about loving guidance, protection and setting the rules and structure that urge us to excellence. How do you offer this to others? Where or from whom might you receive such blessings in your life?
What boundary issues do you need to resolve once and for all? And in what ways is it time to get better organized? There are lessons to be learned about how to use less emotion, more logic, “play the game,” and make clear, firm decisions that create more stability in your life.
Last but not least, in the journey of the Emperor year, you may confront situations that ask how you will use your remaining time on this Earth, especially in terms of leaving a lasting, valuable legacy.
Emperors are often driven to greatness by their issues around their own mortality. That’s because the Emperor’s complementary card of the Major Arcana is Death (13, which is the Death card = 1+3, which is 4 – The Emperor).
Not only would this be a smart time to update your will, organize your final wishes and other paperwork, and make clear to those you love what you wish to bestow after your time here is over. It’s also a powerful opportunity to get more disciplined in the areas of your life that are important to you.
The Emperor Year urges us to think about what we came into this life to accomplish. What will you do in the days ahead to leave your unique mark in the halls of time?
Use this time to set long-term, even lifetime goals and then begin building the foundation to make them happen.
