As we emerge from the quiet days of Imbolc, we are being awakened by the Eight of Wands. The eights of the Tarot are about abilities, self-directed action, and moving ahead. And of course, Wands are fire, action, growth, creativity and energy.
So here we have a very simple, but powerful image of eight wands, flying like arrows, all in alignment and balance. The wands are approaching the Earth, and the fire is finding its goal. There are no human figures in this image (one of only two such Minors), indicating that the point of this card is the energy, and not necessarily some specific situation.
After last week’s Hermit time of contemplation, retreat, or personal dedication, this week’s card encourages us now to get going! It’s time to set our intentions into motion. We can now move forward with focused excitement and confidence.
If you have been in the Winter doldrums, or even undergoing difficulties, life should begin to look much more hopeful. The end is in sight, and it looks brighter than you might have thought. If this has been a time when things had slowed down, or seemed indecisive or stuck, get ready! Events will now be moving swiftly forward.
Just take care that you are not so caught up in the thrill of flight and activity that you neglect to move in an orderly, focused way. Guard against actions that are too hasty or impetuous.
Speaking of which, I must note that one of this week’s big holidays is, of course, Valentine’s Day. And this card certainly points to the fact that love is in the air! In fact, Arthur Waite actually describes this card as the “Arrows of Love!”
So get ready for activities regarding a love affair, or passionate proposals offered and accepted. In what ways are you seeking a rapid, intense gratification of desire? You can certainly make it happen. I would, however, caution against a tendency to brief, powerful infatuations that may end up being complicated, after the first flush has passed.
We also have a New Moon this week. The time of the waning Moon is perfect for letting go, clearing, and releasing. And Gail Fairfield, one my favorite Tarot writers, reminds us that the eights of the Tarot are often about organizing. Therefore this is an ideal opportunity for clutter busting, and making sure that projects, activities and energy can flow freely in your environment. (For some great suggestions, please read the Zen Habits post I shared on Sunday).
This New Moon also brings the celebration of the Chinese New Year, ushering in the Year of the Tiger. The Eight of Wands’ gifts of movement and change are in a powerful alignment with the Tiger’s fiery courage, vigor and passionate nature.
What is your passion? What intentions have you set, that you are now ready to act upon? What is the focus of your desire? What resources can you line up to ensure that success is yours?
In all cases, aim high! This is a time to move towards a swift, joyful conclusion that you know is coming soon. Focus your energy, boldly unleash your creativity, and open to your passionate desires.
The Eight of Wands says, “Go for it!”
