We welcome the hopeful appearance of the Eight of Wands this week. The Eights of the Tarot are about abilities, self-directed action, and moving ahead. And of course, Wands are about fire, action, growth, and energy. So here we have a powerful image of eight wands, flying like arrows, all in alignment and balance.
As I have noted on past visits from this card, this is the only one of Pamela Colman Smith’s Minor Arcana cards with no human figure (or hands) in it. There are no people, animals, or celestial bodies of any sort, just a quiet river meandering through a peaceful, fairly nondescript landscape.
So all attention is on the Wands, which are approaching the Earth; the Fire is finding its goal. This is action at its essence – without attachment to particular circumstance or personality; energy in its purest form, unleashed, in movement. Yet we can also see that this is not chaos. The Wands are moving swiftly forward in an orderly, focused way.
Waite describes this card as the Arrows of Love, so this could be action regarding a love affair, or proposals offered and accepted. As this card is also associated with Mercury in Sagittarius, perhaps you are in the midst of a situation that requires (or is the result of) rapid information being distributed.
In addition, this week, there are a number of auspicious astrological forces in play. Specifically, after four long months in retrograde, the benevolent planet of plentifulness, expansiveness, and good fortune, Jupiter, stations direct on Tuesday. So matters of abundance and creativity that may have been detoured or stuck are very likely to see progress at last! And on the upcoming New Moon on Sunday (Eastern time), our conscious will (the Sun) and inner drives (the Moon) unite in the sign of Libra, bringing important areas of our lives into harmony and balance.
So if you have been in a time when things have slowed down, or seemed unsatisfactory (as our card last week depicted), get ready. Forces are aligning that can finally move us ahead. The Eight of Wands shows activity zooming forward, as long as our intention and targets are clear. As Joanna Powell Colbert notes of her own beautiful Gaian Tarot Eight of Fire, let us be inspired by this card, “to move quickly and burn brightly, as we move towards making our visions a reality.”
This week, get motivated. Get moving. Success is in the air.
