More Swords this week! We receive a powerful message for the start of Summer, as we evidently stand on the razor’s edge of new beginnings and ways of seeing. This Monday is not only the New Moon in Cancer, coming less than a day after the Summer Solstice, but this year it is directly opposite Pluto, Lord of death and transformation. With the intense placement of this lunation, according to some astrologers, we may be learning new lessons about safety, security, home and family.
The Aces in the Tarot, of course, represent new beginnings. Each Ace depicts the essential energy of its suit. Aces are the growth process, whether that growth is physical, mental or spiritual. Since the Swords suit relates to the intellect, ideas, choices, and the mind, the Ace of Swords points to new possibilities in the realms of communication, understanding, and judgment.
But knowledge can be a two-edged sword, and its power can be wielded for good or ill. The sword itself is neutral, just as information is; it is how that power is used that makes all the difference. Intention is everything, although it is also true that intentions alone will not suffice.
This brings to mind the protests in Iran, as the people fight for justice and their right to be recognized, as well as the ways that the Internet has been an important tool in their struggles. Perhaps last week’s King of Swords was concerning the uncertainty of who the real leader is – the Ayatollah, Ahmadinejad, or Mousavi? So will this week’s card herald the painful beginning of a new era for Iran?
Both globally and personally, the New Moon is when we plant a seed, and the Ace of Swords is a seed of clear understanding. We may not recognize it right away, but when it begins to sprout, it could take almost any form – a compelling idea, the hunger for the truth, a call to justice, or a need to be candid and honest.
This is not the week to make choices from your emotional side, but instead stick to the facts. Look for a turning point or breakthrough that brings new clarity and wisdom. Although the Swords often indicate conflict, don’t shy away from new ideas, new wisdom or your own authentic truth. Remember that conflict and change, although difficult, are not always harmful: without change there is no growth.
With the power of the New Moon, the Solstice, and Plutonic confrontations behind it, we may see the repercussions of this Ace for a long time. This week could bring an opportunity for startling clarity. While it may challenge our comfort zone, it ultimately offers liberation from confusion or deception.
Continually ask yourself what truth is being revealed, and what is being muddled. Dare to think, speak, and see with honesty and clarity. And keep your awareness wide open.
