I am so excited to see the response already generated from my posts, regarding where our journey is taking us in the days ahead. But is this, as one email I’ve received suggests, a detour from my posting about Witchy and Pagan lore?
Hardly! What could be more magical, really, than the act of creation? Particularly when that will and desire is rooted deep within our spiritual selves. This is one reason I love Julia Cameron’s approach to the matter of artistic expression. She writes very directly about the interconnectedness between spirituality and creativity, even subtitling The Artist’s Way as “A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity.”
Does this mean you have to believe in God/dess to be an artist? Certainly not. There are many varying routes for the journey of the artist. But my spiritual path is intrinsic to everything I am and do, and utterly informs how I view and express the world around me. I suspect this is true for many of you, too.
So where do we begin? We start with some basic principles, the first of which she calls Spiritual Electricity.
“What we are talking about,” she writes in her introductory remarks, “is an induced — or invited — spiritual experience. I refer to this process as spiritual chiropractic. We undertake certain spiritual exercises to achieve alignment with the creative energy of the universe.
“If you think of the universe as a vast electrical sea in which you are immersed and from which you are formed, opening to your creativity changes you from something bobbing in that sea to a more fully functioning, more conscious, more cooperative part of that ecosystem.
“As a teacher,” she continues, “I often sense the presence of something transcendent—a spiritual electricity, if you will—and I have come to rely on it in transcending my own limitations…It is my experience both as an artist and as a teacher that when we move out on faith into the act of creation, the universe is able to advance. It is a little like opening the gate at the top of a field irrigation system. Once we remove the blocks, the flow moves in.”
So for today, I invite you to consider how you are interconnected with a vast field of energy that forms and un-forms what we call “matter.” Notice the ways that you are one with All That Is. Play with the idea that, especially with what we are learning in the field of quantum physics, your perception of separateness is actually an illusion. If this is possibly so, then what is the It that we are all a part of?
