Spiritual Electricity

Grant me this day my portion of Grace
And switch on the Spiritual Electricity…

— excerpt from my own morning prayer practice

I am so excited to see the response already generated from my posts, regarding where our journey is taking us in the days ahead. But is this, as one email I’ve received suggests, a detour from my posting about Witchy and Pagan lore?

Hardly! What could be more magical, really, than the act of creation? Particularly when that will and desire is rooted deep within our spiritual selves. This is one reason I love Julia Cameron’s approach to the matter of artistic expression. She writes very directly about the interconnectedness between spirituality and creativity, even subtitling The Artist’s Way as “A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity.”

Does this mean you have to believe in God/dess to be an artist? Certainly not. There are many varying routes for the journey of the artist. But my spiritual path is intrinsic to everything I am and do, and utterly informs how I view and express the world around me. I suspect this is true for many of you, too.

So where do we begin? We start with some basic principles, the first of which she calls Spiritual Electricity.

“What we are talking about,” she writes in her introductory remarks, “is an induced — or invited — spiritual experience. I refer to this process as spiritual chiropractic. We undertake certain spiritual exercises to achieve alignment with the creative energy of the universe.

“If you think of the universe as a vast electrical sea in which you are immersed and from which you are formed, opening to your creativity changes you from something bobbing in that sea to a more fully functioning, more conscious, more cooperative part of that ecosystem.

“As a teacher,” she continues, “I often sense the presence of something transcendent—a spiritual electricity, if you will—and I have come to rely on it in transcending my own limitations…It is my experience both as an artist and as a teacher that when we move out on faith into the act of creation, the universe is able to advance. It is a little like opening the gate at the top of a field irrigation system. Once we remove the blocks, the flow moves in.”

So for today, I invite you to consider how you are interconnected with a vast field of energy that forms and un-forms what we call “matter.” Notice the ways that you are one with All That Is. Play with the idea that, especially with what we are learning in the field of quantum physics, your perception of separateness is actually an illusion. If this is possibly so, then what is the It that we are all a part of?

More tomorrow!

    Hey Beth,

I’m joining in today. From my personal experience through magic comes creativity. I remember my first witchcamp at Bardic night. A friend and myself did a comic standup show and everybody laughed.
I had thought I never could be funny on a stage. At another one I discovered my play directing skills and humor. Also at a Witchcamp I joined a one hour ceramic workshop and came up with a beautiful Goddess statue. While doing this I was just flowing with the universe. My hands where working by themselves. My mind was at peace. How inspiring can be witchcamps…
Whenever I can, I do something creative. from the trees in my garden, ceramic discs with celtic symbols are hanging.
If someone looks from afar, they will see a happy child playing.
To be a child is to be connected.
I wrote a poem at my blog after my Imbolc ritual. But I have no way to know if this is how a poem should look like. It is just something that came out.
    Thank you Beth.
    I’m enjoying this.

I agree — creativity and magic go hand in hand.

I experience spiritual electricity when the world is telling me that I am aligned — with little symbols or presents that show up, like a red ribbon bow on the sidewalk when I am thinking about how thankful I am for my teacher.

I experience the spiritual electricity when I am facilitating Reiki healing and information comes channeling through me (usually about the state of the person’s energy body).

The celebration of the Sabbaths are a great channel for spiritual electricity, for we create rituals that gather us into alignments with the energies of the planet, cosmos, multiverse.

The value of recognizing our daily creativity is so IMPORTANT. It is how we can begin to recognize our powers of manifestation!

I am excited about participating in this exploration of the Artist’s Way with you Beth!

A recent death has made me pour all my feelings into my creativity. . All this creativity pouring out of me for me to stay sane and express myself.
Sometimes it can be a little overwhelming. I just let it wash over me when I feel this way. Then flow right back into the current. I am seriously plugging into a deep well of spiritual Electricity.

    Can’t wait for tomorrow’s post.
