Brighid’s Charge

The opposite of war is not peace, it’s creation.
— Jonathon Larson, Rent

There is no doubt that we are moving through times of tremendous socio-economic stress. Our new president, Barack Obama, has encouraged Americans to respond by making service to our country and to one another a priority. This may take many forms, of course, including volunteering, becoming more personally involved in local and regional political causes, and so on.

It has seemed to me, for a very long time, that one of the best ways we can serve our country is to work in very active and conscious ways to bring to an end the long, ignorant, painful history of warfare.

The glorification of war as “normal,” or as any sort of satisfactory means to redress wrongdoing is long obsolete. Whether it’s suicide bombers, or nuclear missiles, as Isaac Asimov pointed out, “Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.”

It is increasingly obvious that in the 21st century, we are intertwined together by technology, economics, and the environment. This increasing interdependence cannot help but destroy the archaic geopolitical definitions of “us” and “them.” While we should honor and celebrate our diversity, to war over our differences is, given the expense and the devastating weaponry, insane.

Over the Imbolc holidays, as many of you did, I renewed my deep dedication and commitment to the beloved Goddess Brighid. This year, She reminded me that I had long ago posted this on my website:

“My passion is to work for compassionate social change
by tending and spreading the flame of Creativity.”

She charged me to renew my vow, and make tending her Fires in this way my priority. For the flames of Brighid are the antidote for war.

So in the days ahead, I hope you’ll join me here as we warm ourselves at the Forge of Brighid, the Source of Creation itself. As we receive Her gifts to us, we shall ourselves become creators, and while we’re at it, become the healers of the failed policies of violence.

Brigid's solar wheel/cross in the picture reminds me of the cross I prepared for Imbolc's ritual.
I made it with palm tree leaves. I feel it is a very powerful symbol.
I can feel the power by just looking at it.
By the way, you site shows the four of swords and the blog the nine of swords…Quite opposite to each other. 🙂
As I live in a region where war has become a habit, I long deeply for peace. But I also know that as long as the extremists on both sides become the majority on each side, the chances for peace diminish. Next week on February
10th we will have elections. There is no Obama here. My vote for the left wing party will hardly make a difference as statistics point that they may not get more than 6 seats in a parliament of 120. The majority of the right wing parties try to compete on the votes, by competing on who is more extremist.
May Brigid's cry be heard in the land of Canaan so all parties may lay down their weapons and live in peace.

    Love & Peace

Arie! First, oops! Thanks for pointing out the goof on my website, which is now fixed!

Second, most important, I echo your prayer for Brighid to heal the sacred lands of the Middle East. May new leaders of compassion and creative solutions arise, with a fierce agenda of peace for all. And may we find the ways to create and support the wisdom and love that is needed.
