Once again, the Tarot shares its gift of perfect timing. With the appearance of the Page of Pentacles, we can expect that there will be important news about money, land, investments, and jobs. That’s not such a surprise these days. But I am fascinated by the fact that this week, we celebrate the Lunar New Year, ushering in the Year of the Earth Ox.
In China, the Ox (or Buffalo) is associated with wealth, stamina, patience, determination, stubbornness, hard work and family. Precisely like the Pentacles suit. This will be a time when sustained, mindful effort is absolutely essential. One source describes the Year of the Earth Ox as, “A year [of] strength gathered through unity, harmony, obedience, courage and hard slog.”
The Pages in the Tarot, sometimes depicted as Princesses or even Daughters, are often messengers, or catalysts for change. They may indicate an actual child (male or female), our own “inner child,” or simply a fresh, new perspective. They are open to possibilities and taking risks. With Pentacles being such a steady and grounded suit, risk-taking in this suit is more like a new beginning than impulsiveness.
In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, the background shows a grove of trees, a newly plowed field, and the Page standing in a meadow of flowers. It would seem that he is in transition, in a period of possibilities.
In the distance the lofty peaks beckon, yet for now, the Page is focused only on his Pentacle Coin, which is almost floating in his hands. Is the coin simply the same color as the sky background, or is it instead transparent? Certainly our current global economic crisis is due, in part, to a lack of transparency and honesty in the wielding of our treasure. It would seem to indicate an auspicious change if we would hold our wealth as the Page does — gently, thoughtfully and with clarity.
