This week another card appears with impeccable timing. During this time of Aries is a lovely time to welcome a rare visit from the King of Wands. Because the Tarot comes to us from an earlier time and value system, its Kings reflect a sexual bias that leadership, strength, and power belonged almost exclusively to the realm of men, not women.
That’s because in our patriarchal history, kings were considered to be responsible for the welfare of their whole societies, with the rise and fall of all their country’s fortunes being upon their shoulders. Thankfully, many newer decks have revised this sexual stereotype.
Nonetheless, all of the Kings in the Waite-Smith deck wear what Arthur Waite called, “a cap of maintenance” under their crowns. The Kings represent both the crowning achievement of success, as well as the absolute responsibility of noblesse oblige.
The King of Wands is the ultimate Fire personality, someone who is able to successfully control and manifest the fiery energy of the suit. He may or may not be an actual person, and he may or may not be male. But there is no doubt that he is intense, creative, willful, and has an unshakable faith in himself. He is exceptionally charismatic, inspiring others with his energy.
Yet, unlike, say, the impulsive knight, he is a mature leader, knowing just when to be bold and take risks (and when to refrain). Full of laughter, a flair for the dramatic, and a preference for actions, not words, he may signal that the coming week will be full of important activity.
Now is not the time to be a shrinking violet. This week, be bold, be seen, be confident and generous. Expand your comfort zone and learn to wield your power. The King of Wands is a strong ally, and an invitation to dare, to take action, and to honor your truest, most creative passions.
