Inspiring Enchantment & Illumination with Tarot & Intuitive Guidance

Tarot Card of the Week – Jan. 14 – 20, 2008

The Four of Pentacles

Money, it’s a crime. Share it fairly but don’t take a slice of my pie.
Money, so they say, Is the root of all evil today.
But if you ask for a rise it’s no surprise that they’re

Giving none away.

— Roger Waters, Pink Floyd

In Tarot numerology, the fours are about stability, grounding, and consolidation. In the money- and practical reality-focused energy of Pentacles, this card could be about structuring our finances, about strengthening our assets and making fiscally sound decisions. That would be a positive interpretation, and a valid one.

But might it be something less benign? Look closely at the man holding his Coins. How centered is he on his material wealth? If you work with the Chakras, you see right away that his crown (with a literal crown) is covered by a Pentacle, as is his heart — both places of enormous importance for our connection to the Divine. In addition, his connection to the Earth is bound to money, the material, wealth, and possessions. There is nothing living that nurtures him, and he is incapable of giving.

In mid-January, the bills from the holidays begin to come due. If we have been overly extravagant, or ignored our true financial situation, this is going to be a very uncomfortable time. People who rely on credit are especially feeling the pinch.

And it is impossible to ignore the bigger picture. The Dow has been a roller coaster of overall decline for weeks, the housing market is staggering. The amount of our nation’s future and treasure being poured into war and waste is mind-numbing, and consumer spending has declined (not just slowed) for the first time since 1991. Many expert sources, including the head of the Federal Reserve and most of the biggest financial advisory firms, are warning of recession ahead.

Yet how gray and dreary the world would be if wealth was only measured in these ways. How desperate our lives would be if we actually allowed this fearful little man to decide and control what is of value. Let’s all see to it that he does not, for there are many like him who would be exactly this sort of greedy, selfish king, hoarding all only for himself.

This week, if you’re paying your bills, or dealing with money concerns, remember that Spirit is not stingy with Her gifts. True and lasting prosperity comes to the hand that is open and generous, not the fist that is closed.
