Dorothy: Well, I-I think that it, that it wasn’t enough just to want to see Uncle Henry and Auntie Em, and it’s that if I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard because, if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with. Is that right?
Glinda: That’s all it is!
Scarecrow: But that’s so easy! I should’ve thought of it for you –
Tin Man: I should have felt it in my heart –
Glinda: No, she had to find it out for herself. Now those magic slippers will take you home in two seconds!
Dorothy: Oh! Toto too?
Glinda: Toto too.
Glinda: Whenever you wish.

Since ancient times, rubies have been used as magical tools, for their rarity and deeply resonant energy are impossible to overlook. Although the deep, blood red rubies of high quality are outrageously expensive, lower grade, non-gem quality rubies are more available and affordable, and can be utilized in magic.
Because they are so precious, they have a near-universal appeal for magic that creates wealth. Ancient traditions in India stated that the possession of rubies would help their owner to accumulate other precious gems.
When worn, the ruby bestows upon its owner protection against all foes, wicked spirits, negativity, plague, sorcery, and famine. It is also a special protector of soldiers, guarding against wounds in battle. The ruby is nearly universally believed to be a strengthening agent for the body’s own psychic defense system.
A ruby in the home will guard it against storms and negativity, especially if first touched to the four outside corners of the house. Similarly, touching trees or the boundaries of a garden magically protects them from lightning and the affects of violent storms.
Ruled by Mars, the ruby can be worn during magical rituals to increase the energies available to the practitioner. It can also be placed on your altar beside a red candle to amplify or restore your energy, should you feel drained or depleted.
In a similar line of magical influence, wearing a ruby is said to increase the body’s warmth. Jewelry set with rubies is worn to banish sadness and negative thought patterns. Such jewelry also produces joy, strengthens will power and confidence as well as dispelling fear. That is why placing a ruby beneath your pillow or worn to bed, assures you a restful sleep, undisturbed against nightmares.
Star rubies, those rarest of stones with a naturally occurring six-pointed star, are thought to be particularly potent in protective and other forms of magic, since a spirit appears to dwell within it. Star rubies can also be used as powerful scrying tools by gazing at the crossed lines of light.
