Until about 1800, all red gemstones were called rubies. With scientific advances, this changed, and many stones which had been thought to be rubies turned out to be, in fact, red spinel, red tourmaline, and red garnet. For instance, the “Black Prince’s ruby” in the English State crown was long thought to be a ruby, but in fact is red spinel.
The most well known ruby deposits are in Burma, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. Other areas where rubies are found include Afghanistan, Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Nepal, Pakistan, United States, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe. The Mogok valley of Burma is best know for the finest and rarest rubies known as “pigeon’s blood” for the intense red color. Thailand is well known for it’s dark, brownish-red rubies.
As mentioned before, the ruby is a “stone of nobility,” so it is able to gather and amplify energy for its possessor. It protects against sorrow and as long as one retains a bit of ruby, one will never lack for wealth. Not surprising, then, that it is the birthstone of Cancer, who is always aware of security and wealth for his or her family. Rubies are also associated with the signs of Leo, Scorpio, and Sagittarius.
According to renowned crystal expert, Melody, the energy of the ruby is intense and vivid, “bringing lucidity to the dream state and conveying understanding and control of the role and action of the mental state upon the physical realm.”
Rubies, furthermore, offer the energy to move beyond the viewpoint that life is about suffering. They assist us in recognizing that there are options available with respect to whether we do or do not need to continue learning our lessons through pain, anguish, or distress. It can enable us to let go of our habits or beliefs that difficulty must be our teacher.
Instead, the light within the ruby encourages us to follow the path of bliss. It can conquer darkness at every level, and is outstanding as a crystal of purification. Ruby energy aids in the resolution of conflict and balancing opposites, and it stimulates our connection and communication with our spiritual guides.
In addition, some rubies have been found to be energetic record-keepers. They may contain knowledge from ancient or lost civilizations and have been used in the transmission and reception of esoteric information from non-mundane sources.
