Here’s one of the happiest cards in the Tarot, and yet another Wand this week! The Tarot’s fours focus on grounding, structure, and stability. But the Wands’ fiery energy of growth is not so easily contained. The happy couple leads the celebration out into the open, away from the walled fortress towards the festive bower.
Some may notice that this is a familiar image, an outdoor pavilion, full of magic. It shows us the joyful simplicity of Nature and portrays the gratitude of recieving the abundant harvest. It is a card of such true happiness, A.E. Waite declared that even if read reversed, its meaning was unchanged.
Tarot scholar Rachel Pollack observes that it is a powerful counterpoint to the Tower in the Major Arcana, whose figures are even wearing the same clothing. Where the Tower shows the consequences of repression and living in fear or hiding, the Four of Wands is the exact opposite – coming out into the open and living authentically, in harmony with the land, in generousity and freedom.
This would be an ideal card to represent sustainable living – growth in ways that are in balance with the Greater Good. For it is the card of the happy home, the fruitful harvest celebrated after focused efforts, and the magic of the hearth.
This week, you may be involved in home matters – looking for a new house, sprucing up or renovating your current address, shopping for home appliances, or other nesting activities. This is also a great time to launch a new project, or reap the rewards of one that has come to fruition. Be sure to get plenty of fresh air and sunshine, and let gratitude fill your heart, for that is the true source of soulful abundance.
