While all the stars that round her burn,
And all the planets in their turn,
Confirm the tidings as they roll,
And spread the truth from pole to pole.
For ever singing as they shine,
The hand that made us is divine.
–Joseph Addison. (1672–1719)
The Full Moon in Virgo is usually a relatively sedate affair, but not this time around, for we will be treated to a lunar eclipse tonight. Lunar eclipses are times of important transformation, points when revolutionary change is possible.
This lunar eclipse is especially unusual because it will be at least partially visible on every continent. The entire event will be visible from Europe, Africa and western Asia. Here on the East coast, it will already be well underway at moonrise. So if you watch the Moon come up at sunset, from a low, flat place, you will be treated to a view of beautiful Luna rising in full eclipse. To find out more about the timing, you can visit NASA’s Eclipse webpage here.
Eclipses, in which the Full Moon is overcome by the Earth’s shadow, and then re-emerges, have much to teach us. The “shadow side” of Virgo is the inner critic – the overly analytical nay-sayer.
Virgo energy can be obsessively preoccupied with cleanliness, perfectionism, and being negative and judgmental. As astrologer Lisa Dale Miller observes, “This is the Full Moon to tame the perfectionist living inside your head. You know… the one that says, ‘Nothing I do is good enough.’ Those inner voices of self-doubt block the ability to act with conviction. This is the time to talk back to self-doubt and take control! Use this Full Moon to say, ‘This is good enough!’ and get your talent out there.”
By finding ways to balance that slave-driver inner critic, you can instead have an ally that keeps you focused and motivated. Used with wisdom, that same energy is what also makes Virgo the healer, the doctor, nurse, teacher, therapist, researcher, scientist, and the engineer. For Virgo, caring comes in the form of finding practical, sometimes painstaking solutions to everyday problems.
This is a great Full Moon to start a de-tox program or focus on your health. The eclipse makes this an ideal opportunity to begin by facing the shadows in your life that contribute to bad habits, poor choices, and the “dark side” of your health issues.
What fears, or even addictions, are disrupting the strong, vibrant health you desire? Until you face, and heal the shadows and secrets that sabotage your best interests, good intentions remain just that – intentions.
As it emerges from the shadow of the eclipse, let this Virgo Full Moon inspire you. For it reminds us that we have tremendous power to find patient, practical solutions that can heal the fears and sadness in our lives.
