Calling the Element of Earth into your home creates stability, abundance, and healing. Over the centuries, folk cultures around the world have discovered thousands of ways to bless and protect the home, using the energy of the Element of Earth. Salt, which I have been discussing, is one of the most basic and universally used ingredients for this purpose.
But there are so many others. For instance, the Earth offers Her gifts of the Green Allies, the plant spirits and devas, with whom we are meant to cooperate and share. One of the most powerful ways to work with the Guardian of the North and Earth for home blessings is to honor the trees that watch over you.
Is there anyone reading this who has not ever had a special tree friend? Most psychically sensitive people can recall childhood experiences, if not encounters throughout their lives, of feeling sheltered and known by a guardian tree. Our ancestors took this cooperative relationship as a given. The somewhat dismissive tone of modern culture describing Druids as simple-minded “tree worshippers” belies the complex symbiotic alliance that existed (and still does) with our oak, thorn, ash, and holly friends, to name but a few.
I believe that the enduring popularity of Shel Silverstein’s classic, The Giving Tree, touches our hearts so deeply, in part, because it is more than just a metaphor about generosity. It reflects a literal truth about trees that resonates with the experience of many children and adults alike. This is because, until we become blinded otherwise, we know that trees have souls.
Since ancient times, we have realized on some level that trees offer wisdom as well as raw materials. They are places of prophecy, protection, and sacred space where those attuned to do so could hear the voices of the Gods. The Oracular Oak was where Zeus spoke to us, where the oracle Dodona’s sacred oak grove spoke in human voices. The All Father in Norse traditions created Yggdrasil, the World Tree, who connects all of the worlds and all of life itself.
Similarly, in many shamanic traditions, trees are known to be doorways to the other realms. Following the roots of a power tree, the Wise can enter and leave the inner realms and underworlds with gifts of healing, visions, and knowledge.
To help us strengthen and bless our homes, the importance of the tree allies around it can not be overemphasized. Tomorrow, I’ll tell you how to cultivate your alliance with the trees near your home, to bless all who dwell there.
