Thank God for dirty dishes; they have a tale to tell.
While other folk go hungry, we’re eating pretty well.
With home and health and happiness, we shouldn’t want to fuss;
For by this stack of evidence, God’s very good to us.
As we continue to honor this time of quiet, retreat, and the slumbering Earth, we are naturally spending more time indoors in the sacred space of our home. Over the past several weeks, I have been making some suggestions about how to improve your home’s energy, through feng shui, and by making your home a template for your intentions.
Perhaps by now you can see there are several repeating themes in this work. One of the most important ones is that your intimate living quarters are both a reflection of, and a source for, your authentic spiritual self.
Throughout time, even in our present secular, often cynical culture, humans have spoken of the Earth as Mother. She gives us Her food, and offers Her resources for our health and shelter. She is the mountain, the cave, stones and fertile fields; She is the heartbeat of the wolf; She is the seed, the root, the bones. She cradles us from our birth and holds our remains when we die.
Calling the Element of Earth into your home creates stability, abundance, and healing. Earth energy in the home can make it a shelter that will withstand life’s storms, both literal and figurative. When you nurture the presence of Mother Earth in your home, She will nurture you with Her strength and groundedness.
There are many ways to connect more richly with the Earth energy in your home. The first is to simply recognize that as you enter or leave your home, you are crossing a powerful, sacred threshold “between the worlds.” Many people enact this awareness by removing their shoes at the door. Not only is this a practical way to keep from tracking in dust and debris from the outdoors, it is an acknowledgment that the home is sacred space. You are, in fact, entering a personal temple.
Purification of your temple on a regular basis is a key practice, and using the Earth’s great gift of salt for this is one of the most ancient and powerful methods for doing so. For space clearing, there is no better method.
Salt has been prized for millennia because of its healing, cleansing, and preservative powers. From the dawn of time, it has been used as medicine and a link to the spirit world. In ancient cultures, it was traded ounce for ounce with gold, and even used as currency in China and for the legions of Rome.
For thousands of years, it has been used for its purifying properties, for ocean water is a powerful antiseptic. Although humans threaten to overwhelm it, the ocean is a totally self-cleansing and renewing environment. This is attributed to its salinity.
Salt has universally been used in rituals of cleansing and purification. Christian church bells were once anointed with salt and water to bless and christen them, so that the bell’s sound would repel demons. As a little girl, I was always taught that if you spilled any salt, you should throw a pinch over your left shoulder, to neutralize the bad luck of the spill.
We now live in a time, unheard of before, when salt is common and cheap. But it retains its amazing power for good. Tomorrow, I’ll give you some ideas for how to work with it to enhance the Earth energy in your home.
