Tarot Card of the Week, Feb. 6-12, 2017: Queen of Wands

Queen of Wands

The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.
Eleanor Roosevelt

To crown this week of the Full Moon, featuring an eclipse, let us welcome the Queen of Wands.

With her black cat familiar and her sunflower, she is famously the only Tarot Queen who sits facing forward, poised for action in her sunny gown.

The lions on her throne and on the tapestry behind her reveal her connection to the sign of Leo, and a resonance with the Strength card.

While all is calm for now, she is always able to act quickly, and is a fully capable warrior ally for people and causes she is passionate about. She combines the fiery, extroverted magic of the Wands suit with the subtle focus of a Queen.

Of course, as with all the court cards, she may or may not be a literal person. And if so, she may or may not be the same gender of the person in question. She can also be you, or simply a certain kind of energy.

The Queen of Wands is extroverted, popular, loves to laugh, and is always up for an adventure. When she walks in the room, everyone notices, and her natural leadership shines in every situation. She tackles problems in a candid, straightforward manner, and she is never afraid to take a risk when she is aroused.

Plain-spoken and direct, she is incapable of deceit, cynicism, or manipulation. With her attractive good looks, warm smile, and easygoing manner, she has many friends and admirers. Does this sound like someone you know?

Bear in mind, though, she is not just empty charm; her enthusiasm is contagious. Never one to sit on the sidelines, she is willing to give her all to the matters at hand. She exudes vitality, good energy, and a sense of self-mastery.

The Aquarius – Leo Polarity

I don’t believe it is mere coincidence that this week’s Full Moon eclipse is in the sign of Leo.

As Cafe Astrology notes,

This Full Moon is especially potent, as it is a Lunar Eclipse. Lunar eclipses are relationship-oriented. The “crisis” that these eclipses tend to elicit is a crisis of lack – a time when we suddenly recognize a great need or want.

The impact of the crisis can act to sever a relationship – it’s possible. But it can also bring two people together with a sudden awareness of a great need for each other…

… Eclipses are tied to changing circumstances. However, we are usually the ones to precipitate or to attract changes because our “inner guides” know that we need it. Human beings are progressive by nature, and although we might stay in situations that are making us miserable for longer than we should, deep down inside we know that change is necessary for growth.

With the Moon full and bright in the sky, symbolic “illumination” occurs in our own lives. However, these new feelings and revelations are emotional ones, as emotions burst forth into our consciousness. It’s time to express ourselves and to let things out of our systems…

This Lunar Eclipse presses us to look more closely at our needs, lacks, and wants in our lives. The Leo-Aquarius polarity deals with the balance between the personal (Leo) and the impersonal (Aquarius).

The energy of Leo is creative self-expression and the boost to the individual ego that we receive through pleasure and romance, while Aquarius rules the group, more impersonal friendships, and objectivity.

This Full Moon urges us to strike a balance between romance and friendship, and between expressing ourselves in personal and impersonal ways.

And this, too, is the accord that this fiery Queen strikes — combining the expression of her very individualistic creativity, with leadership and service to the greater good.

The Power of Empowering Others

A natural leader, she is usually surrounded by people who are inspired by her example and more than willing to pitch in. Her specialty is helping people tap into their own power. By inviting full participation, she teaches her subjects to believe, not just in her, but in themselves.

She is almost always upbeat and cheerful, able to see opportunity in any situation. She is also a vibrantly passionate lover.

The Queen of Wands is never condescending, haughty or pretentious, although she needs to beware of vanity or overestimating her influence.

Yes, she has good reasons to be confident.

However, she also can tend to oversimplify situations, underestimate those who are working against her, and is not always tuned in to nuance. She can also be impatient with people who are hesitant, anxious, or who appear weak to her.

Yet her sincerity is such that people rarely feel resentful when she wields her power. She has high expectations of those around her, so she helps us discover what is best and brightest in us.

She dares us to walk our talk, just like she does.

The Queen’s Way

While the new U.S. president has insulted women with impunity, this Queen is a reminder to both sexes that it is time for our culture to stop tolerating hostile, misogynist systems, behavior, and words.

The Queen of Wands inspires and encourages people of every gender to proudly belong to themselves, while respecting the intrinsic authority of others.

Also unlike the U.S. president, she is in harmony with scientific studies that debunk the chicanery of Machiavelli, instead agreeing with the wisdom of Lao Tzu, “To lead the people, walk behind them.”

She shines a beacon towards a new paradigm, in which we dismantle the old hierarchical “power over” model, embracing instead a more creative and collaborative “power with.”

The Queen of Wands is a helpful guide in dramatic times, through her steadfast, savvy optimism and her willingness to be proactive.

What might she be calling for you to recognize in yourself?

Under the Full Leo Moon this week, what success is now in your hands? What heretofore unseen creative passions may be revealed by this eclipse?

How might the Queen of Wands’ appearance be an invitation for you to deal with matters head-on, with fierce good humor, courage, and creativity?

What dynamic, charismatic powers might you tap into, when, like this dazzling Queen, you embrace life with open arms?

Inspiring, passionate, creative, and forthright, own your personal sovereignty now for the highest good.

May we all shine in these challenging days, blessed by the Queen of Wands’ naturally noble warmth, courage, and sincerity.
