The one characteristic more essential than any other is foresight.
~ Teddy Roosevelt
This week, many of us are preparing to make our solemn vows and dedications for the ancient holiday of Imbolc. But we are also in the midst of a Mercury retrograde, creating delays and possible interference. So it is quite instructive to have a visit from the serious, deliberate Knight of Pentacles.
The Knights of the Tarot are the dynamic risk-takers, champions, and the energetic, often forceful movers and shakers of the Court (which are the cards most likely to represent actual people known to you, or you yourself).
But the Pentacles correspond to the element of Earth, which concerns our physical reality: work, money, health, and home.
So with this Knight, we have a sturdy, well-grounded fellow who is not in a big hurry. In fact, he is the only Knight in the R-W-S deck that is not in motion. “Slow and steady,” is his credo.
He holds his Pentacle before him, as if it is a divination tool, or a compass with which he will navigate his way. Unlike the other suits’ adventurers, this Knight is cautious, measured in his approach, and determined in the pursuit of his goals. A hard-worker, he has tremendous stamina and dedication.
Once he commits, every job is always completed down to the last detail. He never multitasks, or leaves anything unfinished. He’s careful and prudent, never wasteful.
Compared to the other dashing heroes of the Knights, he has a tendency to be a bit stodgy and dull. He’s not known for his playful sense of humor, or brilliant repartee. He finds emotional drama puzzling and mostly unpleasant, preferring down-to-earth plain talk.
His challenge is to know when to overcome his natural conservatism and take a leap of faith, inviting some pizzazz into his life.
Work always comes first for him, and he can be inflexible and obsessive about little details. He doesn’t much like change or risk and tends towards pessimism, in the name of being “realistic.” This attitude pays off for him, however, because he is almost always rather comfortably well off.
Paying the Piper
For many of us, the bills of the holiday shopping season are coming due this week. If this is stressful, now is the time to plan ahead, since they’ll be back before you know it.
This Knight is a great ally for assessing your current situation and putting plans into place that will build a secure, sustainable future.
Particularly with Venus slipping into dreamy Pisces on Tuesday, and the long void-of-course Moon both Wednesday and this coming Friday, resist caution-to-the-wind impulses and spending. Pay off your current bills and tighten your belt if necessary.
The Knight encourages us to be more prudent, steady, and to slow down and focus. Like this Knight, hold your coin carefully, considering where your best investments lie for the long term.
He can help you take advantage of this Mercury retrograde period, which is a splendid time to do some financial reflection and homework. Look at your spending from last year; get a head start on preparing your taxes. Make a budget and stick to it before this year gets any older.
And the Knight of Pentacles nudges you to also take better care of your most precious wealth – your health.
In Fair Weather, Prepare for Foul
Foresight is always clarified by taking time for reflection and hindsight. What lessons are you learning when it comes to investing your material resources? What has been working well for you? What hasn’t?
Who do you know that might be a rock-solid economic adviser? Perhaps this is someone who can help you with an important financial opportunity, or begin a quest for better health. This Knight could also represent an excellent real estate agent.
What prosperity do you hope to create in the coming year? How can your careful choices today help you thrive in the future?
As we approach the turning of the Wheel to earliest stirrings of Spring, what will you plant in the fertile fields before you? May the Knight of Pentacles guide you well.
