Spring scarce had greener fields to show than these
Of mid September; through the still warm noon
The rivulets ripple forth a gladder tune
Than ever in the summer; from the trees
Dusk-green, and murmuring inward melodies,
No leaf drops yet; only our evenings swoon
In pallid skies more suddenly, and the moon
Finds motionless white mists out on the leas.
– Edward Dowden, In September
As the Wheel turned last night from Summer to Autumn, we got a rare treat of having the Full Harvest Moon come right on its heels. This is the first time those two events have come so close together in 20 years, resulting in what some call a Super Harvest Moon. In fact, the two events were as close together as they’ve ever been, with Autumn Equinox falling at 11:09pm Eastern time and the full illumination of the Harvest Moon occurring this morning at 5:17am.
The next time they come nearly as close will be in 2029.
Astrologer Auntie Moon writes:
“The Equinox and the Harvest Moon glide into the change of seasons as a couple this year, strongly emphasizing the need ~ the requirement ~ for balance in our lives. A Full Moon always seeks balance between two opposite signs, but this year we have the Full Harvest Moon in Aries arriving only a few hours after the Equinox.
“It is the Equinox that brings a balance of light and dark hours to us, urging us toward greater preparation for what lies ahead. Whether we are headed toward the dark nights of the Northern Hemisphere or the fiery days of the Southern Hemisphere, we must now set about a change in behavior, in habit, so that we can meet our challenges without hesitation.”
She also notes, “What a spectacular Harvest Moon this year! Not only is it the wild and lascivious Full Moon in Aries, every planet except Mercury will be a part of this dance of fire! Poor Mercury. He’s must have gotten distracted while out hand delivering invitations to the Gods. Odds are, he’ll get the full scoop on it anyway.
“If you take all the energy of the Aries Full Moon ~ which is steeped with Venus and Mars ~ add a dash of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto to the mix, you’ll start to get a feel for just how spicy this particular Full Moon is. Each of these planets is in aspect to our Full Moon dancers. But is that everyone? Of course not! No, this is the soiree of the season. Chiron and the North Node are here, too. Everyone is cutting in on our cosmic lovers.
“How do we handle all this energy? Forget about it. It’s too hot to handle! Just keep on dancing.”
May your dances leap with warmth and fire. May the Moon bring true for you your deepest desire.
Please note: I will be going out of town on a much-needed retreat for the next several days. Please forgive me – this is likely to make my Tarot Card of the Week a day or two late – unprecedented, but necessary.
May we Merry Meet and Merry Part.
And Merry Meet again.
