Inspiring Enchantment & Illumination with Tarot & Intuitive Guidance

Tarot Card of the Week: August 30 – Sept. 5, 2010

Both abundance and lack exist simultaneously in our lives, as parallel realities.  It is always our conscious choice which secret garden we will tend.

Our involvement with the practicalities of Pentacles continues this week, with a visit from the source of them all – The Ace. The Pentacles represent the gifts from Gaia Herself, for the Pentacle is the magical tool that is ruled by the element of Earth and North.

As with all Aces, this card holds the full spectrum of potential within its suit. Each Ace offers a gift, this one being within a garden, that numinous place where the will of Nature and humanity work in harmony.

This card shows us a very powerful symbol – the combination of roses and lilies. It appears in only four of the cards of the R-W-S Tarot, namely The Magician, The Hierophant, the Two of Wands and the Ace of Pentacles.

In the foreground, we see white lilies. They are symbols of innocence and purity, and are sacred to Juno, Eostre, and Jesus. The deeply cupped shape of the lily is powerfully feminine, yet its pistils are clearly phallic.

Beyond the manicured lawn, we see a hedge whose arch forms the gateway to the tall mountains beyond. The hedge is abloom with wild red roses, sacred to Aphrodite, and also associated with the Sacred Heart of Mary and the Christ.

In their excellent reference book, The Secret Language of the Tarot, Ruth Ann and Wald Amberstone note that the rose and lily combination in the Ace is a reference to a line from the Judeo-Christian Bible’s The Song of Solomon, “I am the lily of the valley and the rose of the deep.”

They explain, “The rose and the lily together describe the underlying primal mystery of male and female, of the sexual energy from which the universe descended and by means of which it will return to its original wholeness and purity.”

It is in fact the symbol of the Alchemical Wedding – the ecstatic perfection of Sun and Moon united; the union of the male and female; the meeting of red passion and white purity. Here everything becomes complete, and humanity realizes its divinity.

And yet, as lofty as such concepts may be, our Ace of Pentacles is thoroughly solid and pragmatic. The realization of such magical aspirations is always grounded in our very real, literal world.

This week, there is a potential for a new start, one that has in its very structure the elements for a plentiful, prosperous outcome. Perhaps this is a promotion, new business venture, an inheritance or the new home you have desired.

Similarly, be on the lookout for an event or gift that brings you a sense of physical pleasure and well-being. This is not an invitation to take wild risks, but it is an offer that holds fertile seeds for blossoming into very fortunate results in the days ahead.

In what ways are you ready to build a stronger foundation for your wealth? What do you need to do, in order to expand your sense of personal prosperity and security? Now is the time.

Similarly, this may be an ideal time to nurture your physical body, by beginning a new exercise regimen, or enjoying new kinds of healthy foods.

Ground yourself this week — in the work you love, in the body that brings you pleasure, and in the beautiful Earth that gives you life. As you do, you may discover the secret that has been hidden in plain view all along – that life on Earth is, in fact, the very best of heaven.
