Tarot Card of the Week – July 19 – 25, 2010

Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character.
But if you must be without one, be without the strategy

Did you ever play “King of the Hill?” You know then, that as soon as you are the winner, you are the one under attack. So, perhaps, our King of Wands from last week may have to defend his position against those who wish to target him or bring him down.

With the Wands, which is the suit of Fire, will, and passion, we see a figure who is staunchly defending himself. And the Sevens of the Tarot are ruled by Saturn, so they often present lessons and challenges.  They resonate with the Chariot, the seven in the Major Arcana.

Interestingly, Saturn changes signs this week, moving his taskmaster influence from Virgo into Libra. Astrologer Lynn Hayes notes “In Libra, Saturn brings its tests and challenges into the realm of the way we relate to others and how well we create balance and harmony in our lives.  Saturn will remain in Libra until October of 2012, so we have a while to get this right.”

However, the figure in the Seven of Wands does not appear to feel leisurely in any way. He evidently rushed into the fray without making sure he was wearing matching shoes. This is bound to leave him with unsure footing.

His expression is one of fierce determination, and although he is outnumbered, he stands on the high ground. This would seem to show he has a moral advantage, pointing to his integrity and valor. But he is straddling what appears to be a small stream, not the easiest way to defend himself. If he is divided against himself, and standing on the edge, it is not going to be an easy battle.  He also appears to be staring  beyond the staves below him. What does he see?

Sometimes, the challenges that come into our lives are there to help us develop our courage and inner strength. Or they can help us clarify what is and is not a real priority. Are you in a struggle this week? To what degree is it exhilarating for you? Or is it a drain and a distraction? What issues need confronting once and for all?

This week, you may be called upon to step up to a challenge and defend your rights or beliefs. What do you value, despite the criticism or negative opinions of others?  In what ways might the challenge be coming from within you? Are you being tested in your loyalties? Do not abandon your first loyalty, which is to yourself.

This is not the time to let others walk over you, for that path leads to passiveness and depression. Instead, take the high ground and be prepared to defend what matters.

What happens when you check in with yourself and examine your inner motives?  Do not abandon fairness or compassion, but know your bottom line. What do you deeply care about, and what can you let go?  Who is the aggressor?  Who is the defender?

We all have to pick our battles. Few people really enjoy confrontation, but it may be necessary at this time.  Saturn in Libra especially would point to facing and working through tough situations in the name of fairness and balance. Don’t avoid this struggle just because you may be outnumbered or you feel ill-prepared (like wearing the wrong shoes).

As long as you know your heart is true, assert your courage and defend what you care about. After all, if you won’t be the hero of your own story, who will?

Humm, maybe not wearing matching shoes is part of his startegy?
Left foot with boot. To have a strong foothold.
Right foot with a mocasin so he can change position fast and be flexible. It is closer to the cliff and more prone to be injured.

When I first read this yesterday morning, I thought “Uh-oh.” By the end of the day, I knew exactly what it was about. I don’t have a strategy. In my life, this card is about the power games at work, which is something I’m really bad at. I do, however, have character. I hope it’s enough.
