Today we have another exercise as we come to the conclusion of Chapter Six: Recovering a Sense of Abundance. It’s a fill-in-the-blank exercise that invites us to examine some of our own attitudes and history around the definition and meaning of money. Try to not over-think this, but do be candid with yourself.

    Okay, here goes:

    1. People with money are lucky.
    2. Money makes people happy.
    3. I'd have more money if I wasn't lazy.
    4. My dad thought money was impossible.
    5. My mom always thought money would cause trouble.
    6. In my family money caused problems.

    4. My (grand)dad thought money was important (for living) but he never put excessive importance on it.

    8. If I had money, I’d (yes, you get to answer this a couple of times) I would get my self set up in a sustainable living situation and then go back to school.

    Hope this isn't too late. I had to kind of root around and really think about what I feel about $$$.

    1. People with money are more worthy and deserving me.

    2. Money makes people successful and secure

    3. I’d have more money if were lucky

    4. My dad thought money was don’t know, but he never paid child support.

    5. My mom always thought money would make her life easier, but she also stressed over not having enough.

    6. In my family, money caused fear, stress, and anxiety.

    7. Money equals security.

    8. If I had money, I’d (yes, you get to answer this a couple of times) I’d buy a nice house-4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths w/ a fireplace, good sized yd, pantry, and a small den or office.

    9. If I could afford it, I’d quit my job, stay home w/ my kids and volunteer at their schools, or only work PT and do the same.

    10. If I had some money I’d file for divorce.

    11. I'm afraid that if I had money I would lose it through bad investments.

    12. Money is security and independence.

    13. Money causes conflict and fear.

    14. Having money is not a crime, but can feel that way.

    15. In order to have more money, I’d need to win the lotto or find a better paying job.

    16. When I have money, I usually worry about it, and then budget it.

    17. I think money can make life easier and give me more freedom and choices.

    18. If I weren't so cheap, I’d splurge on a bunch of cute kids outfits at Gymboree and a day at the spa for me.

    Wow. Thanks for these powerful, honest answers.. Can you see from them how conflicted we end up being? If prosperity was a living, aware thing, can you see how difficult it would be for it to come and live with us? We are (oh yeah, me too!) at once hostile, needy, indifferent, and terrified of it.

    Do you think any of these feelings are starting to shift for you?

    If you would like to do a little more work on understanding and healing your relationship with money, might I suggest the VERY inexpensive, VERY short (83 pages) book I've mentioned before by Barbara Wilder, "Money is Love?"

    I highly recommend it.
