The Power of Gratitude

You pray in your distress and in your need; would that you might also pray in the fullness of your joy and in your days of abundance.
— Kahlil Gibran

We have been considering ways to heal our past history with money. There are many, many ways to do this, and these are but a few suggestions, designed to shift your perception and the energy you may be holding about how the Universe supports you (or doesn’t seem to).

One of the biggest healing steps in my own relationships with money, lack, prosperity and fears about financial loss was learning to cultivate gratitude. This is not a Pollyanna exercise in being glad that things aren’t worse. (Although I believe that Pollyanna has gotten a bad rap, and I’ll have more to say about her in a day or two).

One of the world’s leading experts on the power of gratitude, Sarah Ban Breathnach, writes that, “Gratitude is the most transformative force in the cosmos because gratitude is love.” If you’ve been visiting my website for a while, you’ll remember that in January, 2006, I discussed the life changing practice of keeping what Sarah calls a Gratitude Journal.

At the end of each day, after everyone is tucked in, take a precious few moments to pull out a blank journal reserved just for this practice, and list five things from your day that you are grateful for.

Only five. Sometimes this is very easy. But she admits there will be days that are so exhausting, you may only be able to find thankfulness in finally being at the end. At first. But then, stop and think.

According to some estimates, if there is a meal in your refrigerator, if you are dressed and have got shoes, and if you have a bed and a roof above your head, you are better off than 75% of the people in this world. Again, gratitude is so much more than just being grateful for the terrible things that are not happening to us. But it might be worth remembering how very, very well off you really are.

The real magic I discovered in keeping a gratitude journal was that, over time, I began to shape my awareness around hunting for my five items throughout the day. Like being on a treasure hunt, I began to notice more and more serendipitous surprises turning up in my path. It began to feel as if events were vying to be considered candidates for my journal! In truth, they began to get more and more personal, magical, and like an in-joke between the Goddess and me.

If you try this, I promise you that soon you will discover that Spirit is communicating with you. Before you know it, you’ll find there are little golden gifts tucked here and there, throughout your day. In no time, your hardest task will be, not to think of five things, but to limit it to five only.

In this way, you can test and see – abundance is real and it is personal. The hand of the Divine responds to you when you lower the need and fear levels, and instead open your heart with gratitude. Because gratitude is love.
